Among those honoring Ellis F. White (center) and his wife, Helen, were (from left) Katherine Kasten, dean, College of Education and Human Services, A. David Kline, interim president, and Andrew Farkas, director of UNF Libraries. |
Past and current faculty and staff gathered together recently to honor Ellis F. White, the College of Education and Human Services founding dean, and announce the creation of the Ellis F. White and First Faculty Scholarship Endowment.
Initiated by gifts from Dr. Betty Flinchum and Dr. Paul Eggen the fund has already raised $28,705 in gifts and pledges from faculty who worked with White during his tenure of 1970-1976. The need-based scholarship will help support education majors at UNF.
First faculty members and wives recounted the early days of the college and Dean Emeritus White's unusual but effective hiring practices. Ellis felt it was important to recruit new faculty of good will. One method of getting to know the good will of faculty candidates was his requirement of visiting potential faculty and their families in their home.
Bill Herrold, professor emeritus, recalled Sam Russell visiting him
and his wife Yvonne in Utah, "We were concerned about alligators
and swamps, but Sam convinced us to visit Jacksonville and give it a chance...we
never regretted our decision," he said.
Judy Eggen, Paul Eggen's wife, thanked Helen White for her support during those early years, "She always helped the wives and made sure we knew about the services available in the community."
White ended the reception by noting, "the faculty here in the college made me look good."
