Q: Are you "real" police officers?

A: Yes. The law enforcement officers of the University of North Florida PoliceDepartment (UPD) receive their enforcement authority via provision of Florida State Statute 1012.97. We are vested with the same authority and arrest powers as with members of your local police department. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Q: How do I report an emergency or a crime?

A: Contact the UPD by dialing "9-1-1" from any telephone on campus. (If using a pay telephone, no coins are required.) If you are close to a "Code-Blue Emergency Phone" simply push the button and someone will respond to you. Be prepared to:

Briefly state the emergency or the nature of your call

Clearly identify yourself

Provide your location

If applicable, provide a description of any suspect(s)

Q: Is UNF safe?

A: Yes. Statistically, you have a greater chance of becoming a victim of crime in your home town than at the University. Even though UNF is a safe environment, it is not without crime. Crime statistics are published in each term's course catalog, the UNF Student Handbook and in the Graduate and Undergraduate Catalogs. Crime statistics are also available via the Internet or by contacting the UPD.

Q: Why can't I find a place to park?

A: Surveys and traffic counts conducted on a regular basis show that on any given time of day, legal parking is available on campus. While it may not be as close to your destination as you would like, it is available.

Q: Do you do fingerprinting for reasons other than law enforcement?

A: Yes. Fingerprinting is done Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is a $5.00 charge per fingerprint card. Bring the required fingerprint card (unsigned) along with a valid State drivers' license/identification card or passport to the UPD (Building 41).

Q: What do I do if I lock my keys in my car or my car won't start?

A: Call the UPD at 620-2800. In most cases officers can assist motorists with entry into their locked vehicle or provide a jump start. Signing a waiver and proper valid identification are all that is needed for an officer to help. If the officer is unable to assist, at your request our Communications Center will contact your motorist assist company (i.e. AAA, Allstate Motor Club, etc.), a towing/wrecker service, garage, etc.

Q: What do I do if I have lost or found an item?

A: All found items should be turned in to the UPD as soon as possible. You can call the UPD's Records Unit at 620-2367 or come to the UPD to inquire about lost items. Hours for Lost & Found are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m and again from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
