General
Information
CLAST measures college-level attainment of communication and
computation skills via four subtests: Essay, Reading, English
Language Skills, and Mathematics. Students seeking an associate
in arts or a baccalaureate degree are required to pass or exempt
all four CLAST subtests. Students with at least 18 credit hours are eligible
to take CLAST and must meet CLAST prior to admission to upper
division. However, those otherwise qualified for admission to
upper division (60 hours) who have met 3 out of 4 CLAST subtests
may enroll for 36 hours of upper division courses
before meeting the fourth. CLAST scores are part of
the student's permanent record and will appear on official transcripts.
Students can verify CLAST requirement status by accessing student self-service in MyWings. The degree evaluation detail requirement in student records indicates which parts of the CLAST requirement have or have not been satisfied.
Exemptions
"Effective January 1, 1996, s. 240.107 (9), [now section 1008.29 (9)], Florida Statutes, provides alternative ways for students to demonstrate attainment of the required communications and mathematics skills." For further information about these alternatives, see the CLAST exemption policy.
Students
intending to major in education are required to pass
or exempt all four CLAST subtests prior to admission to upper
division. However, students using CLAST exemptions for this
purpose must ALSO have passing scores on the corresponding subtests
of either the FTCE General Knowledge (GK) test or the Praxis
I Pre-Professional Skills Test. This does not preclude an intended
teacher education major who is CLAST-exempt from also passing
CLAST for this purpose; however, it would be advantageous to
pass the GK Test since it is part of the FTCE required for UNF
graduation and Florida teacher certification. Education majors
are encouraged to contact an advisor in the College of Education
and Human Services to learn about requirements of their major.
CLAST
Availability
CLAST is available on paper and on computer, but the Essay portion
is available only on paper. The paper-based version is administered
only three times per year, on one Saturday per month in October,
February, and June. Each subtest may be retaken once every 31
days until passed. Students are responsible for learning about
and understanding CLAST policies, included in the UNF Undergraduate
Catalog, prior to registering for CLAST.
There
is no charge for the first registration of the paper-based CLAST,
there is a $25 fee for any additional registrations. The computer-based
version (CAT-CLAST) is available by appointment in the Office
of Academic Testing. There is a $25 fee that is non-refundable
and non-transferable for each test session of the CAT-CLAST.
Students should register for CLAST when registering for classes;
however, those needing the computer version should also contact
Academic Testing when ready to schedule their test. Students
who register for the paper version will be mailed an admission
ticket one week before their test date. To schedule an appointment
for CAT-CLAST call 904-620-2927.
Accommodations
for Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations
for taking CLAST provided they are registered with the Disability
Resource Center and contact the Office of Academic Testing no
later than the CLAST registration deadline published in the
Undergraduate Catalog.
CLAST
Holds
A course registration hold will be placed on students who have
60 semester hours (including hours for courses in progress at
the time of registration) and have not passed at least three
parts of CLAST. This hold will require students to submit a completed CLAST plan to the Office of Academic Testing in
order to have the hold released. CLAST plan forms are also available to complete in the Office of Academic Testing. After submitting a CLAST plan, a student will receive an email update regarding the status of their CLAST hold in three business days.
Students
who have 90 semester hours (including hours for courses in progress
at the time of registration) and have not passed or exempted
all four parts of CLAST will also have a course registration
hold. Students may complete a CLAST Petition through the Office
of Academic Testing, and if approved, will be granted a
one-semester release of the CLAST hold.
