College-Level Academic Skills Test
Important
Effective, July 1, 2009, the College-Level Academic Skills Test will no longer be available. However, the College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirement still exists.
Go here for more information about CLAS.
General Information
CLAST measures college-level attainment of communication and computation skills via four sub tests: Essay, Reading, English Language Skills, and Mathematics. Students seeking an associate in arts or a baccalaureate degree are required to pass or exempt all four CLAST sub tests. Students with at least 18 credit hours are eligible to take CLAST and must meet CLAST prior to admission to upper division. You must complete your CLAST requirements before exceeding 90 credit hours or 36 upper level hours as stated by school policy and state statutes.
Students can verify CLAST requirement status by accessing student self-service in MyWings. The degree evaluation detail requirement in student records indicates which parts of the CLAST requirement have or have not been satisfied.
Exemptions
"Effective January 1, 1996, s. 240.107 (9), [now section 1008.29 (9)], Florida Statutes, provides alternative ways for students to demonstrate attainment of the required communications and mathematics skills." For further information about these alternatives, see the CLAST exemption policy.
CLAST Availability
The College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is no longer available.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations for taking CLAST provided they are registered with the Disability Resource Center and contact the Office of Academic Testing no later than the CLAST registration deadline published in the Undergraduate Catalog.
Waiver of CLAST Sub tests for Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations while taking the CLAST. Those who are unable to pass a sub test of the CLAST due to a specific learning disability may request that a sub test of the CLAST be waived. The CLAST Waiver Committee reviews all requests for waivers on a case by case basis. To apply for a CLAST waiver due to a disability:
- The student must be registered with the Disability Resource Center and have on file documentation of the specific learning disability.
- The student must have attempted the CLAST at least once with reasonable accommodations, if appropriate.
- The student must have completed Gordon Rule course requirements in the same subject area or any related and approved course substitutions with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
The CLAST waiver form may be obtained in the Disability Resource Center or the Office of Academic Testing.
Other Waivers of the CLAST Sub tests
Any student who has taken any sub test at least four (4) times and not passed may apply for a waiver of that sub test provided:
- The student has completed Gordon Rule course requirements in the same subject area.
- The student has met the general education requirements defined in Rule 6A-10.030, F.A.C.
- The student has demonstrated sufficient effort to pass the sub test and has satisfactorily completed remediation studies related to the failed sub test.
The CLAST waiver form may be obtained in the Office of Academic Testing, Founders Hall, Room 2056.
