Excuse Note Policy

“Treating illnesses is our priority not providing excuses.”

Our medical providers are frequently asked by our students/patients to write medical excuse notes for classes and/or work. Students frequently have medical conditions, psychological conditions, illnesses or injuries that require them to be away from the classroom or workplace, or affect their ability to perform optimally on class work or exams.

  • The Student Medical Services center can provide a medical excuse note only if our providers are involved in the medical care of a student who they feel will need to be absent from class for medical reasons.

Please note:  Our medical providers cannot be expected to write excuse notes for illnesses or problems for which we never provided care.  To request a note stating, “I was sick last week…last month…last year…and I need a note for classes or work, but I never saw a doctor” is unreasonable.

  • If you received care for your illness or injury from a private physician, you should request your excuse note from that medical provider rather than from Student Medical Services.
  • We allow excuse notes to be written by our physician, physician assistant, and nurse practitioners, all of whom are qualified licensed providers.  It should not be necessary for you to have an excuse note specifically written by a physician, nor should your employer or professor require you to do so.

Please understand that acceptance of excuse notes is solely at the discretion of the professor.
