back to Web Development at UNF
UNF provides
directory space on www.unf.edu for departmental World Wide
Web sites. Only "official" UNF departments and units such
as academic departments or other units that report to deans,
vice presidents, and so forth, qualify for those accounts.
NOTE: Student organizations
do not qualify for this type of account. See,
Web Pages for UNF Student Clubs and Organizations,
for more information.
To request an account for a departmental web site on www.unf.edu,
send email to www@unf.edu.
Include the name of the department, the desired name of the
account (which will appear after the 'dept' in the URL), and
the names and userids of all individuals who should have administrative
access to the departmental WWW files. Departmental accounts
are assigned names that reflect the departments' names, e.g.,
humanres (Human Resources) and retention (Retention Services).
You've been assigned the
task of updating your department's web site and don't know
where to start?
First, you will need access to your departmental web site
on www.unf.edu, send email to www@unf.edu.
Include the name of the department, and the names and userids
of all individuals who should have administrative access to
the departmental WWW files (and those who need to be removed).
Further instructions will be given after this information
has been processed. This request should come from someone
who represents the department or college (e.g., dean, department
chair).
All of the departmental web page designers must have Osprey
accounts. Click
here to get more information about Osprey UNIX accounts.
If you maintain
web pages for your department or a UNF organization on the
Osprey system, you will now find your files under the "/var/www/htdocs/...
" directory on the osprey.unf.edu server. Prior to
January, 2002, files were under either the "usr/local/http/htdocs/..."
directory OR "/disk3 ..." directory. The remaining
portion of the address under "/var/www/htdocs/...
" will correspond to the web page address.
Examples:
-
http://www.unf.edu/groups/aitp ------> /var/www/htdocs/groups/aitp
-
http://www.unf.edu/coas -------------> /var/www/htdocs/coas
-
http://www.unf.edu/dept/upd --------> /var/www/htdocs/dept/upd

You have created
your web page, but no one's going to know about it if they
exist only on your desktop computer. The UNF web server is
a machine running software that makes the files you store
on them available to the World Wide Web. The environment that
the web server runs on is an operating system called UNIX.
The way that you transport your files from your desktop onto
the server is called FTP (file transfer protocol). There are
also some special CGI scripts that are available on the web
server that will allow you to add counter, create guestbooks,
etc.
The UNF web server does not support Microsoft Frontpage extensions
or .ASP.
The UNF
Web Page Style Guide is designed to help departmental
web designers create pages or update existing pages. This
guide will tell you what is mandatroy, what you could-and
should-include in your page, and how to put that content into
a form that works on the Web. Links are provided to further
Web resources.
The UNF Image Bank contains many different
images around campus for use on your web page.
There are UNF-trademarked
logos available in the Visual
Identity Guidelines, subject to the restrictions and requirements
contained in that document.
Many departmental sites need to set up online forms for obtaining
information from users. UNF provides access to a program,
"FORMPROC"
that extracts form input data and sends it to the department
via electronic mail.
See the
Counter Information Page for details
on how to configure this utility.
Each department can request creation of a single e-mail alias
that points to one or more email addresses to receive the
data. Send email to aliases@unf.edu
to request a departmental email address.
If you
have any difficulties accessing your web page directory or
files, please send an e-mail to the Web
Administrator. Please include the web page address with
which a problem is occurring (example: http://www.unf.edu/)
and the nature of the problem (example: "trying to copy
a file to directory "/var/www/htdocs/test" and getting
a message of 'permission denied' "). Also, please include
your Osprey userid (example: jsmith) or the Osprey userid
of the person who needs to be able to work on the web site
in question.

for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has a helpful introductory
