Q. What is OspreyNet Internet Services?

OspreyNet is an Internet service available to students living on campus. Students in residence halls enjoy high-speed Internet connections without the use of modems or phone lines! OspreyNet is provided by Information Technology Services in cooperation with University Housing.

Q. I can already access the Internet using my modem, why should I use OspreyNet?

For starters, OspreyNet is fast. Signing up for OspreyNet gives you a direct connection to the Internet that is up to 50 times faster than a 56k modem! OspreyNet gives you instant access to the Internet. With OspreyNet, you are automatically connected to the Internet as soon as you turn on your computer! No more waiting for your roommate to free up the phone so you can get online. Since OspreyNet does not use phone lines, it is now possible for you both to be online and still have the phone available for calls - all at the same time!

Q. What do I need to connect to OspreyNet?

All you really need to connect to OspreyNet is a relatively new personal computer with 10 base-T Ethernet, and at least five feet of Ethernet cable. That's it! While most computers on today's market will do, there are certain minimum specifications that your machine should meet.

OspreyNet Computer Checklist

A computer connecting to OspreyNet should meet the following minimum specifications:
300 MHz Processor

64MB Ram
20 MB of free hard drive space
10 base-T Ethernet (3Com Recommended)
5' or longer Ethernet (category 5) cable

More good news! You can now purchase ethernet cards and cables at the UNF Bookstore. Afterwards, stop by the General Purpose Computer Lab (15/2102) and pick up instructions for installing and configuring your computer for Internet access!

Q. How much does the OspreyNet service cost?

OspreyNet is included in your rent, so there is never anything extra to pay!

Q. How do I sign up?

Follow these few steps:
Run the Ethernet cable from your Ethernet card to the Ethernet jack in the wall, start up your computer, start up a web browser and the OspreyNet registration form will automatically pop up. Answer a few questions and you will be surfing the web in no time.

Q. What about Wireless?

Wireless networking will be available the Fall 2002 term in The Crossings (building Q, R, and S in common area and 3rd floor study lounge). Residents will need to have a IEEE 802.11b DSSS standard wireless card. Brands compatible with our network are LInksys and D-Link.
