Very often, a department
will hire a student worker to fill a part-time position and
the student will continue in the position for a semester or
two. The student leaves or graduates and the department fills
the vacancy with another student. Normally when an employee
leaves the university, the computer account is terminated.
But what the department would prefer, is to maintain the historical
data collected and created by the first student.
In another case
we often see, a department would like to have an e-mail account
that can receive information and inquiries from customers.
They'd like this account to be permanent and not attached
to people who may transfer to another department.
For just such instances,
ITS creates, what we call, a generic computer account. A generic
account is one that will allow student workers to receive
Exchange e-mail and do department work on the Windows network,
such as sharing files and printers. It will allow a department
to have a permanent address that they know will go unchanged
from one semester to the next. Generic accounts can only be
created in the Windows system, not the Osprey system.
If a generic computer
account is something that will benefit your department, please
send a request to your college or department's C-Tech
If you experience any
difficulties with any of your computer accounts, or have any questions,
please contact the ITS Help Desk at (904) 620-HELP or send them an e-mail.
