C-Techs
Who are They
In 1996 a new technology support model featuring individual technical personnel working in the colleges of Education and Human Services, Health, and Computing, Engineering and Construction began. Shortly after inception technical staff were added in the colleges of Business Administration, and Arts and Sciences. The initial goal of these decentralized technical staff, as they were called, was to provide support to the college's faculty and staff, computer labs and computer-equipped classrooms. These technical people have become known as C-Techs. In most cases, C-Techs report directly to an Associate Dean in a college or to a division Director, and to the Decentralized Technology Manager in Information Technology Services (ITS), with some exceptions.
Today there are almost twenty full time C-Techs working in colleges and divisions on campus. The C-Tech's responsibilities have grown from managing labs to providing technical assistance and troubleshooting for faculty, staff, and students. The C-Techs are also the primary conduit through which communication about technology flows between their college or division and Information Technology Services (ITS). Aside from basic technology support, C-Techs also provide internal consulting services. The C-Techs give advice and make recommendations to both their college or division and Information Technology Services on how technology can be used to promote the University's mission. C-Techs also implement those technology recommendations.
The originally proposed decentralized model was five technical professionals acting independently of each other, but coordinating with Information Technology Services (ITS) . Today the C-Techs, despite having different supervisors and working for different areas of the University, work together as well as any team of professionals. One C-Tech summed it up by saying, "I believe that what all the C-Techs have in common is the desire to provide their users with first class computing technology." In that spirit many of the technology solutions that are employed throughout campus are spearheaded by one or more C-Techs.
In the past four years the decentralized/C-Tech support model has proven successful in meeting the needs of the colleges and divisions, and maintaining a standardization of technology within the university. For more information about the C-Techs, contact John Sharp.
