Sick Leave Pool Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sick Leave Pool?
It is a voluntary program to provide employees who are members of the pool with sick leave credits after ALL their leave is exhausted.


Who can join?
You must be employed for one year in a budgeted position and have a minimum sick leave balance of 64 hours at the time of enrollment.


How much does it cost to join?
You must donate eight hours of sick leave to become a member.


When can I enroll?
November 1st through November 30th. The effective date of coverage is January 1st.


When do I use it?
If you suffer a catastrophic illness or injury AND after all of your leave is used, you submit an application to the sick leave pool. You will need to provide physician statements to verify your illness/injury. The pool will approve/disapprove your request.


My daughter is very ill and I need to be there. Can I use it then?
No. The pool is for illness/injury of employees of the University of North Florida only.


I have a worker’s compensation injury. Is that covered under the Sick Leave Pool?
No. It is not covered by the Sick Leave Pool.


Do I have to pay the hours back after I come back to work?
No, you do not. All approved, unused leave must be given back to the Sick Leave Pool.


I am retiring. Can I give my sick leave to the pool as a donation?
You may donate up to 16 hours of sick leave to pool at retirement.


Can I cancel at anytime?
Yes you may. Once canceled, you are no longer eligible to draw from the pool. You may reapply again at the next open enrollment.
