Exhibition Artist Statement and Images:

Surrogates by Jason Godeke

"I have maintained a productive artistic relationship with toys for many years now.
I use them to stage a theater in my studio. I make them run through auditions, rehearsals, and finally a still performance. The toys are surrogates: they stand in for us, the humans, and they serve not only as place-holders, but as masked actors onto whom we may project our own psychology. The stories I make them reenact are derived from mythology, scenes from my life, current or historical events, and my own fancy.

In some of the recent works, I’ve looked to the local newspaper for narrative material, relying on headlines for inspiration. I rarely read the accompanying story; I’m more interested in the broad and unspecific potential of the simple declarative statement: “Man Stabs Self,” for example. Without knowing any details of the story, I’m able to reenact a basic plot-line, inventing my own environment, props, and protagonists. The headline functions as the prompt for a visual fiction. My drawn or painted narrative is sometimes an unlikely match with the original “title” of the story. The nuances of my visual story spring from the studio experience: a perceptual interaction with still-life material, narrative experimentation (auditions, rehearsals, set and production design) using a variety of possible “players” and props, and, finally, the development of form and illusion in the painting itself."

David C. Driskell is a dynamic artist, historian, collector, curator, and teacher .
His paintings and collages can be found in major museums and private collections around the world. In 2000, Dr. Driskell received the National Humanities Medal from President Bill Clinton for his contribution to American culture. Dr. Driskell's scholarly writings have brought mainstream recognition to African-American artists
of the 20th Century and inspired new generations to pursue careers in art.
The University of Maryland has preserved his legacy by establishing the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora.

Jefferson Pinder has created a series of quilts, films, "bound histories," collages, and scrolls that communicate the Afro-American experience. Pinder is "feeding into the Afro-American continuum of art making" by "sifting, cutting, slicing" contemporary media elements in search of "fragments of truth and identity." Inspired by the life and teachings of Dr. Driskell, Pinder is contributing to the growth of African American through his own work and teaching. Mr. Pinder is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland.
