Study Abroad Opportunities
The mission of the Florida West Africa Linkage Institute is to assist in
the development of stronger cultural, educational, economic and social ties
between Florida and the countries of West Africa. That mission is achieved
through cultural exchange, student and faculty exchange, research and economic
expansion activities, and increasing public and private dialogue among institutions
and West African governments.
The Florida West Africa Linkage Institute (FLAWI) has a well-recognized and
successful history of working with West African countries on linkage goals.
A range of cultural exchanges has occurred between the faculty and students
in those countries where exchange is appropriate. The three FLAWI institutions
have held symposia offerred by West African scholars. Several state universities
and community colleges throughout Florida, many of them initiated by FLAWI,
have conducted study-abroad programs.
One of FLAWI's objectives is to improve the knowledge about West African culture
by encouraging increased course offerings for students in Florida colleges
and universities. In its ongoing program, FLAWI encourages and supports curriculum
initiatives in West African studies. In the past ten years, collaborative
efforts have been made between and and among faculties in Florida's public
universities.
- A symposium featuring West African scholars was sponsored by FLAWI for colleges and universities throughout the state. Further encouragement of this important program is being enhanced by providing travel for faculty to exchange research and scholarly publications on West Africa, which can be used in the development of African Studies within Florida universities and colleges.
- In addition to the partnership with Senegal, formal Agreements have been signed with eight Universities in the countries of Cameroon, Ghana, liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Faculty exchanges and Study Abroad programs have been conducted in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.
- The following database is being compiled to market information on the existing Study abroad Programs in West Africa that are being offered to students by faculty at all state institutions and community colleges.

Council Study Center
University of Cape Town
Fall semester, Academic year, Spring semester, Calendar year
The Council Study Center at the University of Cape Town provides students
with a range of academic and intellectual experiences that enable them to
reflect upon the complexities and challenges facing the new South Africa.
Through integration in local communities, students become participants in,
rather than mere observers of, this dynamic and evolving environment. Through
this process, students gain a comprehensive understanding of social relations
within the United States and between the United States and less economically
developed nations. This program is appropriate for students from all academic
disciplines who have a strong interest in learning about contemporary South
African life and society and the forces that have created that society.
