Project Overview - Summary
In this project:
• A curriculum for a two-year degree program in community health was
established for the newly developed “community college” in Bambey.
• Three female and three male professionals from Senegal were trained
in the development, administration and delivery of a community health degree
program.
• Ten members of the CUR staff were involved in training in Senegal
in addition to the six grant team members.
• Several hundred members of the community met with the U.S and Senegalese
grant teams over the two and one-half year period.
• Approximately fifty Florida faculty and health professionals were
involved in the training of the Senegalese in Florida, either working with
the Senegalese in the U.S. training program, or traveling to Senegal to work
with professionals at the CUR or in the community.
• Approximately 23 students from Senegal who are in studying in U.S.
universities and several other students from the U.S. and France were involved
in the U.S. training sessions for the Senegalese team—these students
served as interpreters, hosts, drivers, translators of written materials,
and classroom assistants.
• An additional $25,000 (to be verified) was leveraged from FLAWI grants
and UNF resources for activities beyond the original proposal.
• Formal links were established with all institutions of higher education
in Senegal as well as the Ministries of Education, Health, and Social Services.
Meetings were held with community leaders in Bambey, St. Louis, Louga, Diourbel
and Thies. The U.S. Embassy and USAID were kept informed of the progress of
the grant and invited to events and activities.
• In Florida, ties were established with local health agencies, community
colleges and universities in FLAWI.
Future Plans:
• A relationship with the Center for African Studies at the University
of Florida has been established. The director accompanied the grant team to
Senegal in March. Meetings will be held in the near future to make plans for
collaboration in Senegal.
• A relationship has been established with the West African Research
Association (WARA) and the West Afrcan Research Center (WARC) in Dakar. The
grant team met with WARC personnel during the visit to Dakar in March 2003.
• A Trade Symposium sponsored by FLAWI was held at UNF on May 21, 2003.
His Excellency Dr. Amadou Lamine Ba Ambassador from Senegal was an honored
guest. Ambassador Ba has been newly appointed, so he was briefed on our partnership
with Senegal and on the outcomes of the project. He said that he would be
pleased to assist with our relationship in future. Continuing correspondence
is occurring with Ambassador Ba.
• An invitation will be issued to Minister Moustapha Sourang to visit
in Florida with FLAWI partners. Follow up dialogue and plans for future collaboration
will be the main agenda.
• An invitation will be issued to administrators from Cheihk Anta Diop
University as a follow up to the meetings that the grant team held with them
during the visit March
