Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO) engages students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of the historical roots of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism. The lessons learned encourage the development of individual competencies that will lead to responsible participation in a democratic society. It works to prevent violence and reduce intolerance among young people as they learn to balance self-interest with a genuine interest in the welfare of others.
Students that participated in the program demonstrated a greater decrease in racism and a greater increase in social competencies than did comparison students that did not participate in the program.
