Call to Artists
Project:
PR-0023
College of Education & Human Services
University of North Florida
Jacksonville, Florida
Budget: $40,000
Deadline: December 9, 2008
Through the state of Florida's Art in State Buildings program, the University of North Florida is announcing a national call to artists for the new College of Education & Human Services Building. The Art Selection Committee is open to commissioning site-specific work and/or purchasing existing artwork. The Committee strongly encourages submissions that relate to education, learning and community involvement.
Located in Jacksonville, this comprehensive urban university primarily serves Florida residents especially those of the State's northeastern region. It also serves an increasing number of students from across and beyond the nation. The University of North Florida is located on a 1300+ acre campus at the Southeast quadrant in Duval County. The campus is nested in a natural setting of upland ridges, wetland valleys with man made lakes and is approximately 12 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The academic core of the campus is situated at the inner central ridge, thus automatically buffered from South, West, and East expressways and provides an ideal setting for higher learning. The natural woodlands of the campus area are accessible through a triad of trails situated at the southwest quadrant of the campus.
The new College of Education & Human Services Building will be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, a private, non-profit group that encourages environmentally responsible buildings. The council's primary tool to accomplish that is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, which measures a building's impact on its surroundings. The three-story brick building is approximately 98,000 gsf and is located near the center of campus adjacent to the Brooks College of Health and the new Student Union Building. This facility will house general purpose classrooms as well as special teaching methods and model technology classrooms. Also within the facility there will be teaching labs, faculty offices, a conference center, meeting spaces, student services and an American Sign Language lab. The projected completion date for the facility is May of 2009. This new building will allow the college faculty, staff, students and programs to be in the same place rather than being scattered throughout the campus.
The vision of the College of Education and Human Services is to educate professionals who impact the lives of adults and children. The College, through its nationally accredited, state approved professional education programs, prepares teachers, counselors, and educational leaders for work in preschool, elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education settings. Particular emphasis is placed on urban education and service to children and adults in diverse settings.
Other College programs housed in the College educate interpreters for the Deaf and leaders for the sporting industry. The quality of the College's programs is greatly enriched by its national award-winning partnerships with local schools and agencies.
The College is founded on the principles of collaboration, engagement, and partnerships. Students, faculty, area professionals, and community volunteers work synergistically to promote student learning and to enhance the quality of education and the other fields served. Faculty function as active leaders and responsive partners in the study and improvement of teaching and learning within society. They are committed to developing life-long learners who contribute to their communities and succeed in a changing world.
