Community Resources for Individuals with Disabilities

A number of agencies in the Jacksonville area provide specialized services to persons with disabilities. Their phone numbers are listed below, and students are encouraged to register with the appropriate agency. Contact DRC for more information.

"Dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled individuals in The Greater Jacksonville Area and Beaches…" The Center for Independent Living of Jacksonville serves the disabled community by providing information, referral and direct services.

Additionally, the Independent Living Resource Center provides sign language interpreters for legal, medical, and business situations.

Intelitran/Comsis Mobility Services

Intelitran provides special transportation for persons with disabilities that prevent the use of regular JTA bus services. The cost is a small fee determined by original location and destination (one way or round trip). Scheduling is set on a daily basis. You must call to request transportation at least one day before you wish to use the service. Priority is given in order of work, education, medical and recreational (personal business).

Division of Blind Services

The Division of Blind Services falls under the guidance of the Florida Department of Education and aids those who are blind or have visual impairments in achieving a realistic adjustment. The Division lends assistance by providing counseling guidance, vocational training, job placement, and medical restoration for persons who are blind or threatened with bilateral blindness. To determine eligibility, students should contact local agencies in their hometown.

The City's Disabled Services Division strives to improve the quality of life of all disabled citizens by addressing, researching, and attempting to resolve the barriers that disabled people encounter, which include, but are not limited to, transportation, accessibility discrimination, employment, housing, etc.

The Division's other objectives include: increasing community awareness about accomplishments/needs of disabled individuals, monitoring Federal/State legislation relating to disability rights issues, advising the mayor and the staff of necessary City compliance, suggesting/implementing ordinance that favorably impact equal access/opportunity, and changing City policies that may adversely impact the same. The Mayor’s Disability Council meets the first Tuesday of each month. Meetings are open to the public.

First Call Information and Crisis Line provides twenty-four hour, seven day a week information, referral, and crisis intervention services to citizens of Northeast Florida.

Florida Relay Service (FRS) for the Deaf

The Florida Relay Service assists those who wish to telephone a person who is deaf, but who do not have a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD). They may call the Florida Relay Service and request that the Service relay the information for them. If a deaf person wishes to communicate with a person who has no TDD, the deaf person may call FRS on the TDD and the FRS operator will relay the information to whomever the deaf person is calling.

Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) is a nonprofit service organization that provides educational and professional books in accessible media to people with print disabilities. RFB has an extensive lending library of books on audio cassettes and a recording service for new titles. An additional service is E-text (books on computer disk) which are available for purchase.

On audio cassettes, RFB&D records educational and professional books in all subjects and at all academic levels from fourth grade through postgraduate studies. These recordings include textbooks, research materials, and a variety of computer titles, including software documentation. Selected reference books, law books, and works of literature are also available in E-text.

RFB&D's services are available to anyone with a documented print disability. For our purposes, this term includes not only blindness and visual impairments, but also learning disabilities and other physical impairments that affect reading.

The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) is a state agency designed to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities in making realistic vocational adjustments. In addition, the DVR offers vocational counseling, financial aid and other services to eligible person. Students wishing information about these services should contact their local DVR.
