UNF is Making the Move to Vista and Office 2007

As of Dec 2007/Jan 2008 the University’s computer image for new machines will consist of the Vista operating system and the Microsoft Office 2007 suite.Windows Vista Logo The ITS Release Summary provides more information on the new client.

The major changes in Office 2007 are:

  • Microsoft has introduced new Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats. These have an 'X' added to their file extensions (example: .docx, .xlsx, .pptx). Office 2003 applications, used by most faculty and staff, will not open the Office 2007 files formats. Employees can ask others to provide Office 2003 compatible files or they can have the MS Office Compatibility Pack installed on their office computer. Employees using Office 2007 can follow the easy instructions located at http://www.unf.edu/dept/its/client_sw/office2007_compatibility/ to save their files so that they are compatible with Office 2003. To have the MS Office Compatibility Pack installed on your office computer or UNF laptop, contact your C-tech or the ITS Support Center. After the Compatibility Pack is installed, you will be able to open, edit, and save Office 2007 documents. Questions may be directed to the ITS Support Center at ext. 4357 (HELP) or its-support@unf.edu.

  • New to Office 2007 is the Office Button and the Ribbon which replaces the menu bars. The Office button now replaces many of the items that were familiar on the old Menu bar such as New, Save, Print, etc. The Ribbon condenses many of the toolbars previously available in Office applications to one that contains easy access to the most commonly used features.

The major changes in Vista are:

  • Enhanced Search Feature. Vista allows searching from any open window. Every folder will display a search window in the upper right corner that will perform a keyword search across all file types and applications. You no longer have to indicate the type of file you are looking for, or where you think you saved it. Just enter a word that is found within the filename or document and Vista will find it.

  • Enhanced Start Menu. The Start Menu button has been replaced with a simple Start Icon. Also the Start Menu has been updated to include the Search window prominently displayed; the My Documents folder has been replaced with your individual name and now includes improved security and start up/sleep/power down features. Additionally, Vista now has built in Calendar and Contacts programs.
