Ida Gropper, Director |
Director's Message
With over 240 faculty and staff in attendance, this year’s forum was an opportunity for participants to learn something new, connect with colleagues and celebrate a day of professional development activities. One of the highlights of the forum was the Excellence Awards Ceremony, where award recipients were honored and Dr. Mark Workman, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, was the keynote speaker.
Dr. Workman commented on the appropriateness of this year’s forum theme The Road to Excellence. “I think it is highly appropriate that you have adopted for the theme of your program the slogan The Road to Excellence. What this captures perfectly is the fact that excellence is not a state or a condition that, once attained, can be sustained without further effort.”
At CPDT we strive to help you sustain excellence by providing you with opportunities to learn and apply new knowledge and skills. The annual forum is one example of the learning interventions offered through the Center. To view a slide show of the forum, click here.

Financial Systems Department Established
Did you know UNF has an entire support team dedicated to assisting you with Banner and Self-Service? The Financial Systems Department was created in Fall 2006 to serve the University community and provide the users of Banner and Self-Service a place to contact for answers and assistance to questions and troubleshooting problems that may occur from time to time.
The Mission of the Financial Systems Department is to provide operational and strategic support to the University community in the use of the financial management system and associated processes. The vision of the department is to serve as the knowledge leaders of the Banner system for the University of North Florida and to act as the trusted advisors in the advancement of efficient department processes and proficiency in the use of Banner.
The Financial Systems Department can work with users in producing reports as well as extending new functionality provided by Banner, but not yet implemented. Finally, the team can assist you and your department with questions and changes with access, approval queues, indexes, and other general inquiries.
The fastest way to get your questions and requests answered is by e-mailing us at banner-finance@unf.edu and soon you will be able to visit our web site for more information on who we are and what we are doing to improve your experience with Banner and Self-Service.
The Financial System team will also be moving to the AOL building starting on May 11, 2007 and fully relocated by May 14, 2007. No interruption in current services is expected.

Get to Know Valerie Stevenson - UNF Trainer
 |
Valerie Stevenson |
What department are you with? The Budget Office.
What is your job title?
Assistant Director.
How long have you been at UNF? I’ve been at UNF 6 and 1/2 years.
What sessions do you teach?
Self Service Budget Development and Year-end Training.
What are your hobbies?
Spending quality family time with my husband and son and reading.
What do you like most about training at UNF?
What I like most about training is meeting and interacting with the campus community. While working in the Budget Office most of my interaction with the University is via email or phone. The training classes give me an opportunity to put names with faces.
What is your most memorable accomplishment at UNF?
The most recent wonderful thing that has happened to me at UNF was being asked to be a mentor with the Mentor UNF program, a project of the LeadershipUNF Class of 2006. This is the inaugural year of the project and it has allowed me to share my love of working in higher education with a new employee and develop a relationship with my mentee. I’m honored that the LeadershipUNF class chose me to be one of the seven mentors during this inaugural year. It means a lot to know that my peers see qualities in me that will contribute to the professional and personal development of a new employee.

Ask the Trainer

Excel - Never type a decimal point again (2000/2002/2003)
If you consistently use the same number of decimal places in your Excel values but typing the decimal point slows down your data entry, there’s an easier way. You can permanently set all of the numbers you enter in your Excel workbooks to include the same number of decimal places.
To always display the same number of decimal places:
- Launch Excel and open the workbook in which you want to keep a consistent number of decimal places for every number.
- Choose Tools | Options from the menu bar to open the Options dialog box.
- Click on the Edit tab.
- Select the Fixed Decimal Places check box and then use the corresponding spin box to increase or decrease the number of decimal places you want.
- Click OK to apply the change.
Now when you enter a number in Excel, it automatically inserts a decimal point at the correct position - even though you didn't type one when you entered the number. This can save you data entry time and minimize typos.
This preference will apply to all of your work in Excel until you open the Options dialog box again and deselect the Fixed Decimal Places check box.

Ask the ITS Support Center:
What are some ways I can use my office telephone more efficiently?
by Alison Cruess
1. Set a temporary voicemail greeting.
When you are out of the office, a temporary voice mail greeting is a helpful tool to inform callers of when you expect to be back in the office. This option enables you to set an expiration date and avoid re-recording your internal and external greetings after you return.
To create a temporary voice mail greeting, login to the voice mail system using your extension number and password and follow these steps.
- Press 8 2
- Press 3 to select temporary greeting
- Next press 5 and record your greeting (tell callers when you expect to be back in the office)
- Press # to end your recording
- You can press 2 to review your greeting and 7 6 if you wish to delete it
- When you are finished, press 9 to set an expiry date and time - you will be prompted for the month, date and time. Remember to include the # after each entry. If you do not select an expiry date and time, the temporary greeting will stay in effect until you delete it.
2. Access Voicemail from an Off-campus Phone.
There will be times when it is necessary to access voicemail from home or other off-campus phone numbers. This is an easy procedure. Dial 620-3900; preface with the area code if calling from a long-distance number. Enter your four-digit phone extension and press "#" key. Next, enter the password and press "#" key again.
3. Use the Phone Directory to Locate Phone Numbers
Faculty and staff can lookup phone numbers on their phone. UNF's telephones have a corporate directory containing all of the campus phone numbers.
To use the corporate phone directory follow these steps:
- Press the "Applications" button on the phone and then the button under the word "Select".
- Type in a few letters of the person's last name using the phone's keypad and press the button under the word "Done".
- A list of names will be displayed. Use the navigation buttons to move up or down the list. The navigation buttons are located to the right of the "Quit" button.
- Press the button under the word "Dial" when the name you wish to call is displayed.
4. Record a Voice Mail Personal Verification.
Personal Verification is used as a tag for voice messaging. Personal Verification identifies you by name instead of by phone extension. It precedes all voice mail messages you send.
To record a personal verification, login to the voice mail system using your extension number and password and follow these steps:
- Press 829.
- You will hear: "The personal verification is (what is recorded)" or "There is no name for personal verification for this mailbox (extension)"
- Press 5 to record. Wait for the tone, and then speak your name and if you like, your extension.
- Press # to stop.
- The system will play back "The personal verification is (what you recorded)".
- Press 2 to play back again.
- Press 5 to re-record.
- Press 83 to log off.
5. Use Express Messaging.
Express Messaging is an easy way to leave someone a voice message and bypass the recorded greeting. It is also a quick way to leave yourself a voice message.
To use Express Messaging follow these steps:
- Dial extension 3901 (or 620-3901 from off campus)
- Enter the extension of the person for whom you are leaving the message and press #.
- At the tone, record your message, press # again, and then hang up.
