November 20, 2006 was our first day using the new version of Banner and after only a few small bumps it was smooth sailing after the 3-day rollover.

Users will now be pleased to see an updated, customizable and more “user-friendly” interface that should allow easier navigation and process functionality.

Some new features of Internet Native Banner 7.x are:

  • New Tabbed Interface on certain forms.
  • Document Level Accounting checkbox has been permanently unchecked.
  • New customizable MyLinks pane.
  • Right click capabilities
  • Upgraded Concurrent Curricula components
  • New, more helpful, Help Center link

Although Banner Self Service was also upgraded to version 7.x, there have been no significant changes to the interface or process functionality.

Access to both INB and Self Service remains unchanged.  Users still access either application through http://mywings.unf.edu using their current N# and password credentials.

For updated learning opportunities regarding the new version of Banner and other areas, please visit our newly updated Web site at http://www.unf.edu/dept/cpdt.

Team Building Sessions Open to Departments

TeamHow can departments help employees build trust, master conflict, achieve commitment, embrace accountability, and focus on results?  Through team building sessions that will help them focus on the 5 functions of a team.

CPDT has partnered with a consulting firm to help employees learn about their preferred behavior style(s), how they communicate with others and how they contribute to their team. The sessions are divided into two 4-hour parts:

The 5 Functions of a Team – Part 1: This session is designed to help departments achieve synergy and become a more effective team.  Participants will complete the DISC assessment; understand their behavior style and its effects on the team. Team members will rate the trust level of the team; identify the reasons behind this rating; and determine actions that can improve the level of trust among members.

The 5 Functions of a Team – Part 2:
Teamwork remains the ultimate competitive advantage in any organization. This session will introduce participants to the five functions of a team: building trust, mastering conflict, achieving commitment, embracing accountability, and focusing on results. Participants will be given tools to help them contribute to these functions.

Chairs and directors interested in having their department participate in these sessions may call ext. 1707 and speak with Ida Gropper.

Ask the ITS Support Center:
Are there precautions to take for using e-mail and instant messaging?

by Alison Cruess

As with most communication tools, faculty and staff should take precautions in using e-mail and instant messaging.  E-mail is not as private as we would like to think. E-mail can be compared to sending a letter through the U.S. Postal System without putting it in an envelope. When an e-mail leaves your computer it travels to a server. If the server resides outside of the organization, the e-mail makes several hops to get to its destination. The e-mail has the potential to be read at each stop it makes. Sensitive information should be encrypted before it is sent.

Instant messaging (IM) requires the use of a client program that hooks up to an instant messaging service. It differs from e-mail in that conversations happen in real time. It is similar to e-mail because it is clear text communication. If you use a public network like AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc., your message leaves the organization and passes through one or more servers on the way. There is the potential for interception anywhere the message lands.
