INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY>VIDEO>STREAMING

Streaming is a delivery method for multimedia that allows for the display of audio and video to begin almost immediately, without waiting for the entire file to be downloaded. The benefits of streaming media are that students do not have to wait for the media to load completely, and do not end up with a permanent copy on their computers. The University of North Florida uses RealNetworks technology for media streaming.

Creating Streaming Media
The creation process is simple. Media is recorded from nearly any source, DVD, VHS, etc. to a streaming file as it plays, so the conversion is in real time.

Faculty Streaming Accounts
Faculty interested in streaming video or audio can request an account on the streaming server by contacting CIRT. Currently, there are no size limitations on the streaming server.

To Add Files to the Streaming Server
Once an account has been created, it can be accessed while logged into any computer on the UNF network by clicking on Start, Run, then typing in
\\stream\media\<your n-number>. Copy the streaming content to this folder to start streaming it. Filenames on the streaming server should be composed of letters and numbers, and should not contain any spaces or symbols. You can create sub folders in this folder.

To Deliver Media
Once you have added mediato the streaming server, you can deliver or publish it using the following address:

http://stream.unf.edu:8080/ramgen/<your n-number>/<filename>

example:

http://stream.unf.edu:8080/ramgen/n00000000/movie.rv

To Play RealMedia
To play files the RealPlayer software application needs to be installed on the user’s computer. RealPlayer is part of the UNF campus client, and is installed on all classroom, lab, library, and office computers. For computers that do not have RealPlayer installed it can be freely downloaded from http://www.realplayer.com.
