COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 3 credit hour course provides an examination of chronic, acute and contemporary diseases. Included in this course are the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic procedures, prevention, control and treatment for each disease.

METHODOLOGY

Ten modules will be presented via the Blackboard learning environment to include, lectures, discussion forums, quizzes and a final exam. In addition, the textbook, its companion web site, and additional sources will be used to provide information in which to develop and enhance learning of course material.

MEETING TIMES

This is a distance learning course and requires NO meetings. However, it is required that you log in to the course a minimum of one time per week. You will need to access the BB course site frequently and read ALL announcements. Communication is critical so please be sure to keep up with the various forms of information transfer.

QUIZZES

Modular online quizzes will be used to assess student understanding in each of the modules. Each quiz will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions. Quizzes 1-5 will be available until the completion of Module 5, quizzes 6-10 will not be available until the start of Module 6 (please see schedule below for exact dates). Each quiz will have a 25-minute time limit. Multiple attempts will be given, however, forced completion will be in place disallowing the saving of previous attempts. Therefore, each attempt must be completed. The last attempt will be considered your final score for a particular module quiz. All quizzes must be completed by the deadlines designated above. NO make ups will be given.

DISCUSSION FORUMS

Three forums will be available, each with a specific purpose. The "frequently asked questions" (FAQ's) forum should be used to find answers to commonly asked questions, the "Talk with Dr. Watkins" forum should be used to communicate with Dr. Watkins,, and the "Group" forum is available for students to find potential group members for collaboration during the course. Please refer and use these forum to communicate with your instructors and peers.

MIDTERM

A 100-point (50 multiple-choice questions) midterm will be available in Blackboard on the menu bar during the week following completion of module 5 (please see schedule below for exact dates). The time limit will be seventy minutes to complete all 50 questions. The exam must be completed in one attempt, and the exam link will not be available after the deadline. Exceptions will be judged on an individual basis, however for each day beyond the exam deadline there will be a one letter grade deduction.

FINAL

A 150-point (75 multiple choice questions) final will be available in Blackboard on the menu bar as "FINAL EXAM" to take during finals week (please see schedule below for exact dates). The time limit will be equal that given for face-to-face course final exams: 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete all 75 questions. The exam must be completed in one attempt, and the exam link will not be available after the deadline. Exceptions will be judged on an individual basis, however for each day beyond the exam deadline there will be a one letter grade deduction.

Once you have done so you will then need to log in each time you access the premium content. Again, this is an optional resource for you to consider.

OBJECTIVES

To successfully complete HSC 3551 students should be able to do the following with regard to each module of the course:

  • Describe the gross anatomy & physiology of each system
  • Define the etiology of common disease processes
  • Analyze and discuss the pathophysiology of each disease presented
  • Provide examples of treatment options for common disease processes
  • Illustrate understanding of preventive behaviors related to various disease processes

EVALUATION

Course performance will be assessed in the areas specified below. Total points will be calculated to percentages which will be used to assign a final letter grade. All assessments MUST be completed to earn a course grade.
