HELPFUL RESOURCES >BLACKBOARD>FAQ>WEIGHT GRADES

How do I weight grades in the Blackboard Grade Center?

To weight the grades in the Blackboard Grade Center, setup a Weighted Calculated column in the Blackboard Grade Center. You may either configure the existing Weighted Total column or add a new Weighted Calculated column (an unlimited number of calculated columns may be added in each course).

  1. To modify the exisitng Weighted Total column, click the Weighted Total drop-down, then click Edit Column Information.
    Edit Column
To add a new Weighted Calculated column, click Create Calculated Column>Weighted.
    Add Weighted Column
  2. Enter the Column Information: Column Name, Grade Center Display Name, Description, Primary Display, Secondary Display.

  3. Select the columns and/or categories to include in this weighted grade, then set the weight percentages. To select a column or category, click the item and click the arrow button to move the item to the Selected Columns box.
    Select Columns
  4. Once a column or category is selected, enter the weight percentage for the column/category. Note: the Total Weight should equal 100% in order to calculate the grade correctly, but does not have to equal 100% in order to add/configure the Weighted column.
  5. Next to Weight Columns, select Equally to weight each column in a category equally (regardless of points) or Proportionally to give each column in a category a percentage of the weight applied to the category based on the points the item is worth (items worth more points carry more weight).
  6. Select the desired options for Drop Grades (you may drop 1 or more lowest or highest grade in a category) or Use only the _ value to calculate (this option allows the instructor to calculate the weight for a category based on either the highest or lowest score in the category rather than using the average for the category).
  7. Calculate as a running total: select Yes or No. Note: A running total only includes items that have grades or attempts. Selecting No for this option includes all items in the calculations, using a value of 0 for the item if there is no grade.
