"How Should Jacksonville Adapt to Climate Change?"

The Debate is Over.  The Conversation is Heating Up!

The goal of the symposium is to open a conversation about how we should adapt to climate change.

Northeast Florida is likely to be preoccupied for the foreseeable future with the various consequences of global warming.

The effects will probably include sea level rise, changes in rainfall patterns, more and bigger storms, and rises in average temperatures. What grows here and the general character of the region is likely to change. So will our economic environment, our transportation systems, our employment opportunities, and our food and water supply.

In short, our community is in for major changes and they will be on us soon. How should we encounter these changes?

Responses to global warming have two aspects: mitigation and adaptation.

Mitigation includes conserving energy and finding new ways to produce it. Mitigation may also involve new modes of transportation and changes in our housing.

This symposium, concerns the second kind of response: adaptation. Given that changes will occur, how should we encounter them?

This Symposium is sponsored by UNF’s Ethics Center.
