Allopathic medical
schools grant the degree of doctor of medicine (MD)
while the osteopathic schools grant the degree of doctor
of osteopathy (DO). Both degrees allow the recipient
to work in a medical setting as physicians treating
illness, disease, and prescribing medication. Osteopaths
stress working with the musculoskeletal system (manipulation
of the spine, muscles and joints) to heal and treat
illness in addition to drugs and/or surgery. The viewpoint
is that the whole body works together and to treat any
ailments, you should look at and treat the whole body.
The
training for both branches is very similar. Both go
through four years of medial school with at least three
years of residency. A student graduating from an allopathic
medical school with generally go straight into residency
while students graduating from an osteopathic school
will do a 12 month rotating internship before beginning
their residency.
