Peer Discipline: A Self-Directed Team Case Study
Bruce Fortado, Lawrence O'Brien

Abstract:
Peer discipline is explored based on case examples from a United States financial services unit. Field interviews reveal some of the prevailing norms, how the decisions to act were reached, and various direct and indirect means of enforcement. Most of the documented corrective actions involved a few informal leaders. These were all senior workers, but their styles and methods were quite different. The relative merits of their creative corrective actions need to be weighed. Further, important tradeoffs exist between formal supervisory and informal peer disciplinary systems. Peer discipline techniques can be documented via fieldwork, assessed and future efforts improved.
