Lecture
for UNF Community Focuses on Communication Skills
In a recent lecture at UNF, Dr. Rick Brinkman armed his
audience with insights to wield in the face of a communication
crisis. Best known for his lectures and books on “Consious
Communication”, Dr. Brinkman offered a look at human
behavior and strategies for how to assertively deal
with any personality type, from the unmotivated to the
obsessively-controlling. He captured his audience with
his unabashed humor, as evidenced by the lecture’s
title “Dealing with People You Can’t Stand
and How to Bring out the Best in People at their Worst.”
Brinkman’s message was universal. The
principles can be applied to communicating with family,
friends, or co-workers. Though the event was open to the
Jackonville community, there was strong attendance by Coggin
College of Business alumni, guests, and students.
Dr. Brinkman's book is used in the policy classes at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels to assist in
the preparation of students entering the work environment.
“A good business leader needs to know
not only the necessary financial or management skills,
but also how to communicate effectively with other people,” said Dr.
Steven Williamson,
Associate Professor of Management. Dr. Williamson
was instrumental in bringing Dr. Brinkman to UNF.
Several top business schools, including Stanford, Harvard
and Yale, have acknowledged the need for today’s
business leaders to learn “softer” skills by
restructuring their curricula. Leadership and communication
training is essential. What is business, if not relationships?
Partnerships with other companies; relationships between
suppliers and buyers; and that which affects everyone personally
on a daily basis, inter-office harmony among co-workers.
Coggin College offers lectures such as this
with Dr. Brinkman as a resource for continued learning.
Students become more well-rounded through educational opportunities
outside the classroom. In addition, lecture events allow
alumni and the greater Jacksonville community to stay connected
to UNF.
