UNF SIFE
Ranks 16th in the Nation
The UNF Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are all too
familiar with success. For the 10th year in a row,
the UNF SIFE team won the regional championship, earning
the chance to participate in the National Exposition in
May 2007. They competed against 950 other teams and
ranked in the top 16.
Dr.
John P. McAllister, Dean of the Coggin College of
Business, attended the competition in Dallas to support
the team. “I am continually impressed not only by
the scope of SIFE’s projects and their commitment
to the community,” Dean McAllister said, “but
also by how articulate and enthusiastic the students are
when they present.”
The honor of winning the award is minor compared to what
UNF SIFE accomplishes during the year through their educational
outreach projects. Notable this year was the development
of “Little Hands Gathering Cans”. UNF SIFE
members worked with first and second grade students at
Seabreeze Elementary School to collect aluminum cans and
exchange them for cash at a recycling center. The children
used the money to purchase a tree at Wal-Mart, which they
then planted at their school.
“This project educated children about the importance
of recycling, ethics, and corporate responsibility,” said
Fred
Pragasam, UNF SIFE faculty advisor. The program is
now slated for national rollout, complete with a Ronnie
the Recycling Raccoon workbook for students and presentation
kit for instructors.
SIFE is an international non-profit organization active
on over 1,800 university campuses in more than 40 countries.
SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities
by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics,
entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and
business ethics. Their projects are judged at competition
on creativity, innovation and effectiveness.
