A
Trip for Transformation
The UNF community is buzzing about transformational learning
opportunities. What do these opportunities provide?
President John Delaney launched the “transformational
learning opportunities” initiative to assure that
every student will receive exceptional attention and will
explore a broad range of academic programs. UNF has defined
a transformational learning opportunity as:
A transformational learning
opportunity is a learning opportunity inside or outside
the classroom that potentially enriches or augments
student learning and personal development.
These life changing experiences happen quite frequently
for Coggin College students through our many and varied
study abroad and semester abroad trips to exceptional guest
speakers in the classroom to engaging student and community
class projects.

One recent study abroad trip truly epitomized the transformational
experience. Dr.
Steve Paulson and Dr.
Robert Frankel led
a four-week trip of 15 students that focused on port and
port-related business site visits in Jacksonville, Marseille
and Istanbul, and was supported by classroom instruction
overseas.
Dr. Frankel observed that the students also enjoyed learning
about cross-cultural management issues and socio-cultural
contrasts between the "west" and the "east."
This intense study abroad opportunity, coupled with a
Spring course in the college, offered six credit hours
to the juniors and seniors participating and received not
only a grant from the university to assist with the program
but also generous philanthropic support from Jim and Teri
Babcock.
“We live in a business world that is becoming more
internationalized every day,” noted Jim Babcock. “Teri
and I really believe that opportunities like this important
trip will help to provide students with real-world examples
of what life is like beyond the classroom.”
“For our students, this experience was especially transformational because
of the unique opportunity to compare maritime port management techniques across
cultures, and extensive direct contact with international specialists of European
and U.S. universities,” said Dr. Steve Paulson. “We are very grateful
to the Babcocks for their generosity.” |
