Flagships are Delivering
Just What Florida Needs
During the
2007 Florida International Business Summit, opening keynote
speakers John Adams, President of Enterprise Florida, Inc.,
and Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Chancellor of the Florida State
University System, reiterated the case for Coggin College’s
Flagship programs in International
Business and Transportation
& Logistics.
Adams explained that the state’s challenges include, “telling
the story of trade. Most of our universities are not doing
enough to teach students about trade’s value or to
provide the skills, such as foreign language and logistics
training, which our firms need new hires to have.”
“The labor market is now global, not just regional
or even national,” noted Rosenberg.
The Coggin College created its Flagship programs in recognition
of such needs. At the core of the Transportation & Logistics
Flagship is a Logistics Information Technology Solutions
Laboratory (LITSLAB), which will allow students to learn
how to use real-world logistics software before they graduate.
“The LITSLAB will give UNF Transportation and Logistics
majors a huge edge in the job market,” said Robert
Frankel, co-director of the program.
The International Business Flagship includes
a significant component devoted to enhancing foreign language
education, both on campus and at language institutes abroad.
It also sponsors dozens of study abroad opportunities annually,
addressing another recurring theme at the conference—college
graduates are not well-traveled enough to cope with the
demands of business in a global economy.
