Offered for Students and the Community
During the Fall 2007 semester, Coggin College of Business
invited several executives to share their knowledge and
expertise in the areas of accounting, logistics, and crisis
management. The lectures provided students with real-world
knowledge to supplement what is learned in the classroom.
Lectures were also open to the public, allowing alumni
and the greater Jacksonville community to stay connected
to UNF.

Advanced Accounting
Lectures
The Fall Advanced Accounting Lecture Series, organized
by the Department of Accounting and Finance, provided
graduate students in accounting access to the most
current topics in the areas of Auditing and Accounting
Information Systems. Thanks to the generosity of the speakers
and their sponsoring companies, the free lectures were preceded
by a networking reception to allow the students to meet with
alumni and accounting professionals from the Northeast Florida
community. Lectures in the series included:

Ship to Shore:
Balancing Commerce and Security
at the
Port of Jacksonville
More than 100 attended this interesting, informative, and
relevant lecture sponsored by the Transportation & Logistics
Flagship Program. Students and faculty from UNF
and FCCJ, alumni, and people from the business community
were on hand to hear about the challenges Jacksonville
will face as the port expands dramatically in the next
several years with the arrival of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL),
Hanjin and growth of an Asian trade routes. Commander
Anthony Popiel (U.S. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville) and
Douglas Straatsma (Assistant Director for Trade U.S. Customs
and Border Protection) elaborated on the partnership between
the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection and the
efforts to maintain safety of vessels, waterways and passengers,
protect the environment, and combat terrorism. Illegal
immigration, contraband, intellectual property rights also
come into play at the border.
Crisis and Emergency
Management
For the Fall 2007 Speaker Series luncheon, the Coggin
College of Business Alumni Chapter presented "Crisis
and Emergency Management: Are we safe? Is your business
prepared?" Don Hall (Deputy Director of Duval County
Command Center's Emergency Preparedness Division), Jack
Morgan (CEO if Northeast Florida American Red Cross), and
Richard Crosby (Chair of UNF's
Crisis Division) each discussed their agency's
role in preparedness and response plans for major
emergencies including: hurricanes, wild fires, hazardous
material and pandemics. Additionally,
the speakers addressed the steps businesses should take
to ensure they are prepared for an emergency. |
