Route to National Prominence
UNF's Transportation & Logistics
Program Takes Aim at a National Ranking
The Transportation & Logistics Program
in the Coggin College of Business at UNF is well on its way
to national prominence, with sights on a top 10 ranking,
keeping company with programs twice its age and size. Firms
have increasingly sought logistics majors due to the impact
logistics has on competitiveness and unique skills required
for managing logistics, both within the firm and across multiple
firms in the supply chain. In the US and abroad, rapid growth
in the call for logistics-based solutions and the related
career options are sparking increasing student interest in
Transportation & Logistics Programs. This is especially
true for students at UNF because the surrounding city of
Jacksonville is a growing metropolitan center of finance,
commerce and trade, with all five modes of transportation
– air, water, motor carrier, rail and pipeline –
interfacing in Jacksonville. As well, leading transportation
and logistics companies such as CSX Transportation, CEVA
Logistics, Crowley Maritime, APL Logistics, and Landstar
System, Inc. have major corporate facilities on the First
Coast….in the past three years, the number of students
seeking a B.B.A with a major in Transportation
& Logistics has tripled in size. In addition, MBA concentrations
in Logistics have more than doubled in the same time frame.
The curriculum of the
UNF Transportation
& Logistics Program is very similar to that of the ‘Big
Five’ logistics institutions. It covers everything
in logistics that employers seek in graduates. The courses
are drawn from information systems, economics, finance,
law, management, marketing, quantitative methods, social
psychology, and speech. In addition to the required logistics
courses, students are strongly encouraged to complete a
semester internship with a company engaged in logistics.
Many organizations
have demonstrated their confidence in the UNF Transportation & Logistics
Program by offering scholarship support to students. Logistics
companies that have generously contributed their support
to offset the financial burden of tuition for UNF students
include:
• Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals
Jacksonville Roundtable
• Jacksonville Port Authority/South Atlantic Caribbean
Ports Association
• Pat Moran and JM Family Enterprises
• Crowley Maritime Corporation
• Jacksonville Chapter of the National Defense Transportation Association
• Sea Star Line
The support offered by these companies will continue to attract
bright logistics students and advance the program along its
path to national prominence.
