Internship Instructions


You may obtain a copy of the entire internship handbook and all other International Business Internship information and forms from the Department of Management during regular business hours. If you have any questions, contact the International Internship Coordinator, referred to below as "Coordinator".

Instructions
1.
Ensure that you meet the requirements for enrolling in the International Business Internship course.
a.
You are required to:
• be in good academic standing (not on academic probation or suspension)
• have a grade point average of 2.00 or higher
• have completed at least three of the following courses with grades of C or better:
    ECO 3703 International Trade
FIN 4604 International Finance
MAN 4600 Management of International Business
MAR 4156 International Marketing
 
b.
The best time to do your internship is during your second-to-last semester. Waiting until your final semester can put you at risk of not finding an internship. Moreover, having an internship during your final term will decrease the amount of time that you can devote to your job search.
   
2.
Create a high-quality resume.
  a. Meet with the Career Management Center staff to improve to improve your resume and make necessary changes.
  b. Take your drafted resume to the Internship Coordinator for approval. If changes are required, you must make them and obtain the Coordinator’s approval at least 3 months before your internship begins.
  c. Give the Coordinator five copies of your resume on high-quality paper
   
3.
Arrange your internship.
  a. There are two ways of arranging an internship. Ultimately, the internship must be approved by the Internship Coordinator.
• Find an internship on your own
• Work with the Internship Coordinator or the Career Management Center
  b. To be approved, an internship must consist of the following:
• At least of 180 supervised hours
• A variety of international business learning experiences
• Exposure to the international aspects of the company's operation
• Agreement by the company to do the following
-› Certify the required number of hours you work and the tasks that you perform
-› Sign a weekly time sheet
-› Complete an evaluation of the intern and discuss the evaluation with the intern
-› Accept a one-time visit during the semester from the Coordinator
  c. Submit a letter on company letterhead signed by the supervisor that explains the details of the internship
  d. Internship credit may be earned for a student's present employment only under the following circumstances:
   
The internship changes the nature of the student’s job responsibilities significantly, resulting in a new learning experience. You may NOT receive internship credit for the job that you are currently doing.
   
You submit a one page word-processed explanation describing your internship responsibilities and how they will differ from your current responsibilities.
   
Both you and your internship supervisor sign this explanation.
  e. You must have your internship arranged at least one (1) week prior to the beginning of the UNF registration period.
   
4.
Once you have arranged an appropriate internship, you must complete the following forms and submit to the Internship Coordinator, along with the letter from the firm.

  Download Five Learning Objectives
Must be developed in consultation with your employment supervisor and signed by him/her. Be sure to retain a second copy of the learning objectives for you to use in the preparation of your final report.
  Download Student Contract
Take any required actions that it mandates.
  Submit these forms and the supervisor’s letter on company letterhead to the Internship Coordinator no later than one week prior to the beginning of the UNF registration period.
 
5.
The Internship Coordinator will determine whether your internship meets program requirements.
  a. If your internship meets the program requirements, then UNF will give you permission to register for the International Business Internship course (GEB 3361) before the beginning of the registration period.
  b. If your internship does not meet program requirement, then the Internship Coordinator will notify you of that decision and the reasons for it. The Coordinator will use the contact information you provide on the "Request for Approval to Regsiter" form above to contact you, so be sure to keep the Coordinator informed of any changes that occur.
  c. Regular communication with the Coordinator throughout your internship search should ensure that you are not stuck with a non-approved internship once registration begins.
   
6.
Register for the International Business Internship course.
  a. To receive credit for an International Business internship, you must actually register for GEB 3361 just as you would for any other course. (Don’t forget to pay for the course.)
  b. Students may use only one international business internship in their Program of Study.
   
7.
Submit “Mid-semester Time Sheet” to International Business Internship Coordinator and attend the mid-semester internship seminar.
  Once your internship begins, you will have to ensure that several reports and forms are submitted to the Internship Coordinator on time. The first of these is the Mid-Semester Timesheet. Your supervisor should fill out and sign this sheet at the end of each internship week. You are also required to attend the mid-semester internship seminar.

8.
Complete the "End-of-Semester" Timesheet.
  During the second half of the internship, your supervisor should fill out and sign the “End-of-Semester Timesheet” at the end of each week.

9.
Have your supervisor complete the "Employer Evaluation".

  a. At the beginning of the last week of classes, your supervisor must complete this form.
  b. Your supervisor must discuss your evaluation with you (indicating on the form that he/she has done so)
  c. Mail or fax the form to the Internship Coordinator (address is on the form) so that the Coordinator receives it no later than the first day of final exam week (or by the last day of class in a summer term).
   
10.
Complete the “Intern's Evaluation” form.

Discuss the responses on this form with your supervisor.
   
11.
Write a final paper describing the internship experience.
  a. For each of your original five Objectives, your paper must either
• Explain how you accomplished the objective, or
• Identify those factors that prevented you from doing so.
  b. Paper formatting requirements:
• Word-processed with twelve-point font and one-inch margins
• Double-spaced, with page numbers
• 5 to 10 pages in length
• Conform to formal report writing style
• Correct use of grammar, spelling, and sentence construction
• Stapled in the top, left-hand corner. (No reports in folders will be accepted.)
  c. Review the final paper with your supervisor. Each page of this report must be signed by your supervisor indicating he/she has read your report.
  d. The Coordinator will grade your paper as if it were a project for your employer in a position you received after graduation.
   
12.
International Business Internship Coordinator must have received the completed “Employer Evaluation” form.
    The coordinator must receive the Employer's Evaluation form by the first day of finals week (or the last day of classes for a summer term internship).
     
Grading
  Internship grading is pass/fail. A passing grade requires ALL of the following:
  a. The student meets all deadlines, as described in the Checklist. It is the student’s responsibility to be know and meet all requirements and deadlines
  b. The supervisor rates the student in the median category or higher in the following areas:
• relations with others
• judgment
• ability to learn
• attitude
• dependability
• quality of work
• knowledge of international business
  c. The supervisor rates the student as satisfactory in both attendance and punctuality.
  d. The supervisor rates the student’s overall evaluation as average or better.
     
    Failure to meet any of the above requirements will result in a failing grade for the internship.
