Cologne University of Applied Sciences, also known as Fachhochschule Köln (CUAS), was founded in 1971 and is well–recognized by German employers for its department of Business Administration and Management. In 1995 the department was ranked 14th out of 120 German–speaking universities reviewed by Germany's Manager Magazine. CUAS is located close to the city center of Cologne near the banks of the Rhine River.
Cologne, Germany
Köln (spelled Cologne in English) is an interesting and lively city, the fourth largest in Germany. This cosmopolitan city is home to more than a million inhabitants. Köln has a university town feeling with about 80,000 students, too. Just about everywhere you can see examples of the cultural and historical treasures from the city's 2,000 year history. For example, the city's most famous landmark is the Köln Cathedral with two spires over 157 meters high. The view from the top is worth the climb. Köln provides accessible transportation within the city, country and throughout Europe with more than 1,200 train arrivals per day in its main railway station. Modern high–speed trains link Köln with London, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Berlin at hourly intervals.
More Information
Getting Started:
Soon after arrival in Cologne, CUAS hosts a variety of orientations. One orientation is designed for all students new to CUAS followed by a second orientation for all GlobalMBA students.
An optional German language course is available for three weeks prior to the start of the program, which many students participate. Also, a required intercultural training activity is scheduled during the first few weeks of the term in Bonn, Germany.
Housing
GlobalMBA students at CUAS can choose to live in shared apartments or in a home stay. CUAS provides a guide for students and recommends that students plan three to six months in advance before the start of the academic term. Rent ranges from approximately $300–$370 per month, depending on preferences. It is common to pay a deposit of one month's rent and a small contract fee. Students are expected to make housing arrangements themselves based on the information provided from CUAS.
Getting Around
All students are required to pay a one–time semester fee for the “Semesterticket.” This ticket is a travel card on all KVB local transport (Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe) and on the German railway trains, which do not charge an additional fee (these trains are called “zuschlagfreie Zöge”) within the “Verkehrsverbund Rhein/Sieg – VRS” (the travel zone for Cologne). The cost is approximately €170 (2008).
