Faculty
Engaged in Scholarly
Activities
Coggin College faculty engage
in scholarly activities in order to maintain and improve
our intellectual capital, and to fulfill our individual and
institutional responsibilities to add to the body of knowledge
in our disciplines. The majority of our
intellectual contributions are discipline-based: they add
to the theory or knowledge base of our respective fields,
and often result in research results and theoretical innovations
published in peer-reviewed academic journals.
About 25% of our scholarly endeavors contribute to and influence
professional practice, and include articles in practitioner
journals, creation and delivery of executive education courses,
and published reports on consulting.
Faculty also
conduct research related to learning and
teaching, which influence the teaching-learning activities
of the college, and include preparation of new materials
for use in courses, creation of teaching aids, and research
on instructional methods.
All three areas of scholarship
are necessary for effective teaching. Faculty must
first be content experts in their fields – meaning
that discipline-based scholarship (or basic research) is
the foundation of scholarly activities. However,
in order to achieve our mission of educating and developing business professionals, faculty must also be experts on how
to disseminate and apply that content knowledge to and for
our students as well as those already working in the various
business disciplines.
In sum, we strive as a faculty to be
experts at what is
being learned, as well as how it is being learned
and applied in practice.
