Mission

To provide students who are interested in pursuing a career in the sport industry with opportunities to engage in service, professional development, practical applications of knowledge, research, and mentoring.

 

Goals

 

1. Aid in the continued professional development of the students and the program. Which includes:

  • Activities related to becoming a high-functioning professional in teaching, coaching or related fields.

2. Provide consistent opportunities for service learning. Service learning helps students become more caring and responsible adults while Enhancing the academic process.


3. Develop and esprit de corps among the students and to offer them the chance to network with faculty and others in their chosen field.

  • Promotional activities for UNF Athletics
  • Event planning and promotion for UNF Recreation and Intramural Department
  • Professional Speakers
  • Field trips to various sport facilities
  • Pep Club for various athletic teams
  • Fund raising activities
  • Participation in various sport related research

CONSTITUTION 


ARTICLE I
NAME AND OBJECTIVES The name of this organization is the Sport Management Alliance of the University of North Florida hereinafter referred to as "SMA". SMA will provide students who are interested in pursuing a career in the sport industry with opportunities to engage in service, professional development, practical applications of knowledge, research, and mentoring. Objectives: 1. Aid in the continued professional development of the students and the program which includes activities related to becoming a high-functioning professional in teaching, coaching or related fields.2. Provide consistent opportunities for service learning. Service learning helps students become more caring and responsible adults while Enhancing the academic process. 3. Develop an esprit de corps among the students and to offer them the chance to network with faculty and others in their chosen field.

ARTICLE II
REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP Any student enrolled in the Sport Management program at the University of North Florida shall be eligible for membership in SMA. Any student enrolled at the University of North Florida shall also be eligible for membership in SMA.

ARTICLE III
OFFICERS AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Composition: Officers shall be elected from students in the Sport Management Alliance Program beginning the summer semester of their first academic year, and will consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. When new officers are initiated, a designated mentor, who has previously served as an officer, will voluntarily serve as a member of the Executive Committee until his/her graduation from the Sport Leadership Program. These four officers, mentor, and the Faculty Advisor shall comprise the Executive Committee of SMA. Eligibility: The four officers shall be elected by a quorum of the membership. At the conclusion of the spring semester, from a collection of anonymous nominations of the Sport Leadership students, elections will take place by secret ballot. Elected officers will be installed during the first meeting of the summer semester. The summer semester shall serve as a transition period between the previously elected Executive Committee and the newly elected Executive Committee.

ARTICLE IV
DUES Annual dues for members of SMA shall be determined each academic year by the Executive Committee of the SMA.

ARTICLE V
TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP Membership shall be discontinued if a student discontinues enrollment at the University of North Florida. All membership shall be discontinued if a student fails to pay the SMA dues. Failure to participate in activities and meeting will result in termination. Termination will be determined by the Executive Committee

DUTIES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OFFICERS:

PRESIDENT: President shall be elected by majority popular vote of the University of North Florida Sport Management Alliance members. Term of office shall be one year. May be reelected one time. Following are functions and responsibilities of President:

  1. Serves as the official spokesperson for the organization concerning public relations and speaking engagements.
  2. Presides over all business meetings.
  3. Initiates fund raising activities.
  4. Schedules guest speakers.

VICE PRESIDENT: Elected by vote of full members. Must be at least a sophomore. Term of office is one year. May be reelected. Following are functions and responsibilities of Vice President:

  1. To assume the office of President if necessary.
  2. To be present at all meetings.
  3. To assist the President whenever possible.

SECRETARY: Elected by vote of full members. Must be at least a sophomore. Term of office is one year. May be reelected. Following are functions and responsibilities of the Secretary:

  1. To be present at all meetings.
  2. Record the minutes of the meetings.
  3. Type up the minutes of the meeting. Two copies are to be made; one posted and the other filed.
  4. Send out invitations to recruits.
  5. Keep the Attendance Record.

TREASURER: Elected by vote of full members. Must be at least a sophomore. Term of office is one year. May be reelected. Following are functions and responsibilities of the Treasurer:

  1. To be present at all meetings
  2. To report to the membership regarding all financial information.

ARTICLE VI
TERMS OF OFFICE Officers and Executive Committee Members shall be elected from students in SMA beginning their second academic year for a period of one academic year, i.e., Summer, Fall, and Spring Semesters. Vacancies of the Executive Committee: In the event that one or more of the officers of the Executive Committee is unable to fulfill his/her term, the remaining Executive Committee will solicit nominees from the general membership, and the officers and Executive Committee shall elect the person(s) to complete the term of the vacant position(s). The election will take place during the next scheduled or specially called meeting of the Executive Committee.

 
ARTICLE VII
COMMITTEES EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, mentor and the Faculty Advisor.

ARTICLE VIII
FACULTY ADVISOR Upon the recommendation of the Executive Committee of SMA, the Faculty Advisor shall be the individual in charge of the Sport Leadership Program.

ARTICLE IX
PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURES Robert's Revised Rules of Order shall be the parliamentary authority in all matters covered by SMA.

ARTICLE X
AMENDMENTS Amendments to the Bylaws of the SMA shall be proposed in writing and submitted to a member of the Executive Committee not less than thirty day prior to the meeting at which they will be considered for approval by the membership. The vote of two-thirds of the membership shall be required for passage of amendments to the Bylaws.

ARTICLE XI
MEETINGS The SMA shall have a minimum of one meeting each Fall, Spring, and Summer Semester during each academic year. Other meetings may be called as requested by the President and/or the Coordinator of the Sport Leadership Program. The Executive Committee shall meet a minimum of one time per month, or as needed at request of the President of SMA or the Coordinator of the Sport Leadership Program. The President or his/her designee of the SMA shall meet a minimum of once a month with the Coordinator of the Sport Leadership Program.
