La-Juan Stout instructs undergraduate students in American Sign Language (ASL). Since ASL is considered a foreign language credit, Dr. Stout serves students from all colleges at UNF. Her areas of interest include training teachers of the Deaf to be sensitive to the needs of ELL students.

Previous related work experience I began my career in education as a high school English teacher. I encouraged students to appreciate Chaucer and Shakespeare. Not long into my career, I changed from teaching hearing high school students to teaching Deaf high school students. I taught Basic English skills to Deaf students who struggled with English. Another career move led me to working with Deaf students from other countries – or English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students. After several years teaching Deaf and Deaf ESOL students, I made one more career move. I stepped into a position at the University of North Florida to teach American Sign Language as a foreign language.

Courses you typically teach As indicated earlier, I teach American Sign Language (ASL). My focus has been ASL I, however, although from time to time I teach ASL II. Occasionally, I teach Deaf Education courses, such as Language Development for the Deaf and Dorm Practicum.

Areas of interest and/or research I am still an active “team member” at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. Every semester I facilitate the ESOL teacher training. I am interested in better understanding the educational needs and learning styles of Deaf ESOL students.

Outside hobbies Hobbies that I enjoy include playing the piano, singing, and reading. Social interaction is a huge part of my life in church, health clubs, and work. If family can be considered as a hobby, then that would be my best and favorite.
