Karen Patterson, Ph. D. is an Asssociate Professor and Program Director of Exceptional Student Education at the University of North Florida. She was recently awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for 2007-2008. Her research interests are shaped by her goals to have successful outcomes for educators and children with disabilities. Dr. Patterson believes that the most important factors in student achievement are the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the teacher. Therefore, her research has focused on:

    1. Improving K-12 practices for underserved students in special education, and;

    2. Investigating the impact of collaborative partnerships and parental involvement to increase positive outcomes for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD), learning disabilities (LD), and autism.

Dr. Patterson is co-sponsor of the Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) and enjoys collaborating with students and faculty to improve educational practices for children. She currently teaches courses in classroom/educational management, affective strategies, and applied behavior analysis. She is also a professional member of Kappa Delta Pi.
