Prior to joining COEHS, I served school districts and private psychiatric hospitals for a total of 27 years in four states as teacher, program developer and administrator, diagnostician, and behavioral specialist. Although not currently teaching at UNF, courses I’ve taught have included language arts, assessment, early childhood, and strategy courses in emotional/behavioral disorders. I have also served as supervisor for special education interns. Most recent awards were induction into Phi Kappa Phi in 1999 and the Thomas Mulkeen Award for excellence in doctoral research in 2000.   My current position engages both my passion and major research interests: Family/school partnerships, teacher empowerment through learning communities engaged in action research, and the development of professional and organizational resilience. As regional coordinator for the North Florida Personnel Development Partnership (NFPDP), I write grants and implement a wide variety of professional development activities in service to Florida’s Comprehensive System of Personnel Development. The NFPDP’s mission is to increase and support the number of highly qualified teachers and related services professionals for individuals with disabilities, ages birth to 21, in northeast Florida . The partnership includes nine school districts (Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, and Union), parents, Early Steps, regional institutions of higher education, and related school and community stakeholders. My work also includes measuring and writing about outcomes of NFPDP activities, collaborative planning with our Regional Council, the Florida Department of Education, and the Florida Department of Health, and colleagues engaged in similar work.   In addition to my professional work, I have three other passions. First, I have been married to my best friend for 35 years. We are currently basking in our new roles as grandparents, and what a special privilege that is! Second, we actively, year-round, pursue our love for Mother Nature. Birds of all types and butterflies can find sanctuary in our yard. In 2004, we bought 16 acres for the sole purpose of preserving it as a natural habitat and with the hope to protect more land in future years. Third, I love to write for my family. In the past three years, I have written two family stories with my mother, a history for our son, and a storybook for our grandson. New ideas are already incubating for my next project!
