Wood, Janice A. Ph.D.
Dr. Janice Wood received her Ph.D. degree in Early Childhood Education in 1974 and has been an early childhood professor at the University of North Florida since 1974. She is currently the Crawford Early Literacy Faculty Fellow in the College of Education and Human Services, Department of Childhood Education. Dr. Wood instructs undergraduates and graduates in early childhood and primary education. Her expertise areas include early literacy, reading, and family involvement. Her research areas focus on early literacy and effective strategies for teaching at - risk children. She developed the Early Literacy and Leaning Model (ELLM) and it is currently being used in 187 classrooms, at 87 inner city school sites with 3100 children. Dr. Janice Wood received her Ph.D. degree in Early Childhood Education in 1974 and has been an early childhood professor at the University of North Florida since 1974. She is currently the Crawford Early Literacy Faculty Fellow in the College of Education and Human Services, Division of Curriculum and Instruction. In 1990, Dr. Wood designed, developed and wrote the Early Literacy and Learning Model (ELLM) program in collaboration with the College of Education and Human Services and the Florida Institute of Education. The Early Literacy and learning Model (ELLM) program was designed to increase the literacy achievement level of at-risk, low-income 3, 4, and 5-year-old children. The ELLM curriculum is used throughout the state of Florida. Dr. Wood is currently writing an Infant/Toddler curriculum based on six domains outlined by the Florida Birth to three Standards. She currently serves as a “literacy consultant” to 11 local ELLM literacy coaches, and 15 state-wide coaches. She serves as a board member of the Jacksonville Literacy Pros of Jacksonville, Inc. She also serves as a member of the Florida Community College- Education Advisory Committee. Dr. Wood is currently the Vice President for Early Childhood Education for Florida Association for Childhood Education International. Dr. Wood has written extensively in the field of literacy. In the past 5 years, she wrote 3 early literacy articles in refereed journals, wrote five family literacy calendars, and was the author and senior editor of 36 instructional packets for the ELLM program. Most recently she wrote a literacy book for parents of newborn infants, Bringing Baby Home- The First 12 Months. In 2005, she wrote, directed and produced a videotape, ELLM in the Classroom, focusing on literacy. Dr. Wood is co-writer and will present a paper/article in April 2006, and has submitted the article to the journal for the American Educational Research Association.
