Master of Education in Exceptional Student Education (Initial Certification for Exceptional Student Education) The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education, with the focus on Initial Certification for Exceptional Student Education, is designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in obtaining their initial Florida Certification in Special Education. The program consists of 75 semester hours that include prerequisites, core and major requirements. The amount of prerequisite course work will depend on the individual students educational background and ranges from 18 to 32 hours. The program is approved by the Florida Department of Education. ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM Applicants seeking admission to the College of Education and Human Services must have the following to be eligible for a graduate program: 1.) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution; 2.) A 3.0 GPA during the last 60 hours in your first baccalaureate program or a composite score (verbal and quantitative sections) of a 1000 on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE); 3.) If the overall GRE score is less than a 1000, the General Knowledge Exam is required before full admittance. Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for admissions must apply under the college’s exception policy. Applicants must also submit 3 letters of recommendation on official letterhead. All applicants seeking admission are required to meet with an academic advisor and sign a tentative program of study prior to admission. TWO YEARS OF CURRENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED OR MUST COMPLETE CLINICAL REQUIREMENT. IF CLINICAL REQUIREMENT IS SATISFIED BY TEACHING EXPERIENCE, ADDITIONAL COURSE WORK MUST BE TAKEN TO SATISFY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS.
