Leadership
Doctoral Student Selected as Leader

As an Academic Advisor and a first year doctoral student in the Educational Leadership program, Angela Garcia has been very active. In addition to the typical heavy demands placed on all doctoral students, Angela has already assumed leadership roles within the educational community.

When Associate Dean Larry Daniel first approached Angela in Fall 2002 to submit a research proposal at the Southwest Educational Research Association (SERA) annual meeting, Angela pursued this opportunity. With encouragement and mentoring from Dr. Daniel, Angela wrote a proposal that was accepted by the SERA Board. At the annual meeting in February, she successfully delivered her presentation and fielded questions.

At the conference she was nominated and subsequently elected as the Graduate Students’ Representative on the SERA Board. The SERA Board consists of 16 members, of whom only 1 is a graduate student. Angela says, “It is a privilege and an honor to be selected to be the ‘voice’ of graduate students for SERA. I look forward to working with my colleagues and representing their views at future meetings.”

Angela’s doctoral work as well as her job as an Advisor in the College of Education will focus on community college students transferring to 4-year institutions. She says, “Community colleges play such an important role in society today. It’s so important to pay particular attention to this type of transfer student and provide them with the necessary support and mentoring structure to make their transfer successful.” Angela’s presentation of a sponsored paper at the National Academic Advising Association’s national meeting supported her recent selection as the Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor at UNF, an award that spans all departments and colleges.
