2006 Gladys Prior Awards
for Career Teaching Excellence

2005  Gladys Prior Winners L to R: Timothy  Clark, Dan Hall,
Margie Nolan, Nancy Lotowycz

Nominate an Outstanding Teacher

Four inspiring teachers will be surprised in May 2006 with the Gladys Prior Award for Career Teaching Excellence. Each year Gilchrist Berg gives four teachers $12,000 each to honor his 4th grade teacher, Gladys Prior. The teachers may spend the $12,000 in any way they wish.

Write a letter to nominate a full-time classroom teacher in an accredited Duval County public or private school with 10 or more years of teaching experience. The two major criteria for selection are sustained teaching excellence and sustained inspiration of students.

Teachers cannot nominate themselves. Organized campaigns with many letters on behalf of one teacher are discouraged and may disqualify a nominee. Anyone may nominate a teacher including students, former students, parents, grandparents, other teachers, and administrators.

In your letter describe your nominee with specific examples of sustained excellent teaching and sustained inspiration of students. Include the attributes and actions that you believe make this teacher deserving of the Gladys Prior Award for Career Teaching Excellence.

What is it about this teacher that makes students believe they are the most important people in the world? What is it about this teacher that inspires students to be the best that they can be?

The Gladys Prior Awards for Career Teaching Excellence are
among the largest monetary awards for teachers in the nation.
Gilchrist Berg, founder and president of a Jacksonville investment company, established the awards in 1998 to honor
his 4th grade teacher at Ortega Elementary School , Gladys Prior.
In addition, Mr. Berg honored his  6th grade teacher, Gladys Roddenberry,
by naming five UNF graduate scholarships after her.
Mr. Berg has pledge over$2,000,000  to continue these awards  for
Duval County public and private school teachers.

“Teachers are one of our most important assets. We simply don’t do enough to remind ourselves of their great influence on us every day of our life. Maybe in some small way, these awards will cause others to reflect on the great contributions teachers have made to their lives and the life of their families.”
