About
The Department of World Languages is committed to providing students with the opportunity to learn one or more languages at UNF.
As such, in addition to majors in French Studies and Spanish as well as minors in those languages, the department offers courses in Chinese, German and Latin. In order to maximize the students’ language learning classes are kept purposely small at the beginning and intermediate levels. Advanced courses in literature, language and culture are also purposely small.
The regular faculty of the department are committed to mentoring and advising students. They maintain regular office hours and eagerly welcome into their offices students who need guidance in their classes or who seek to communicate in the language and enhance their cultural and literary knowledge. Additionally, language tutors provided by the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) assist free of charge those students requiring additional help in their language classes.
From the most basic classes for beginners to advanced courses in literature and civilization, UNF language students engage in problem-solving strategies, including negotiating meaning, understanding and working within cultural diversity, and applying historical background knowledge. Students will develop competence in both oral and written communication. The language faculty review curricular offerings often in order to insure the relevance of textbooks, classroom material and course content.
At UNF, language students undertake a transformative learning experience in the sense that as they enhance their linguistic skills and cultural understanding, they become better prepared to negotiate today’s multicultural global society.
Along this same line, the Department of World Languages encourages students to study abroad either in our program in our French Program in Strasbourg or our Spanish Program in Santander. Spanish students may also study for a semester at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (Spain). Many of our students opt to enroll in other summer, semester or yearlong language programs throughout the world. Students receive departmental credit for all pre-approved courses of study abroad.
The Department of World Languages offers courses in English as well that meet the university Foreign Culture requirement.
