Alpha Kappa Delta
International
Sociology Honor Society
AKD
is the International Sociology Honor Society and was established in 1920 by
Dr. Emory S. Bogardus at the University of Southern California. The society
seeks to increase student scholarship and to foster interaction between faculty
and students.
Who
is eligible to join AKD?
Students
interested in becoming a member of AKD must meet the following requirements
and submit an application form, along with their transcripts and the one-time
initiation fee of $40, to their university chapter.
For
undergraduate students:
- Must
be an officially declared sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest
in sociology.
- Must
be at least a junior.
- Must
have a GPA of 3.0 or better, and rank in the top 35% of their class.
- Must
have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken at
UNF.
- Must
have completed at least four regular courses in sociology prior to initiation
(exclusive of extension or courses graded pass/fail).
For graduate students:
- Must
have completed one semester of graduate study in sociology with a B average
or better, and have continued matriculation in a program of study leading
toward a graduate degree in sociology.

- A
one year subscription to the official journal of AKD, Sociological Inquiry.
- The
opportunity to compete with other AKD members in student paper competitions,
and a chance to travel to regional and national sociology conferences.
- The
chance to make friends with other sociology honor students and enjoy close
contact with the sociology faculty.
- Become
familiar with the discipline of sociology and develop skills to cultivate
a career in sociology.
