PSI CHI
What is Psi Chi?
From: www.psichi.org
Psi Chi is a national honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.
How do I become a member of Psi Chi?
Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests, and who meet the minimum qualifications. Typically students who have n invitation to join Psi Chi society is an honor reserved for students who achieve academic excellence in their psychology courses as well as their non-psychology coursework.
What are the benefits of membership?
The Society publishes a quarterly magazine, Eye on Psi Chi, which helps to unite the members, inform them and recognize their contributions and accomplishments. The quarterly Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research, fosters and rewards the scholarly efforts of undergraduate psychology students and provides a valuable learning experience by introducing them to the publishing and review process.. All chapters register their inductees at the National Office, where the membership records are preserved for reference purposes. The total number of memberships preserved at the national office during the first 75 years is over 467,000. Many of these members have gone on to distinguished careers in psychology.
Back ground Information
Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 at Yale University for the purposes of encouraging excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Psi Chi's sister honor society is Psi Beta, the national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges, universities in the USA and Canada. The National Office is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A National Council, composed of psychologists who are Psi Chi members and who are elected by the chapters, guides the affairs of the organization and sets policy with the approval of the chapters.
Psi Chi's Symbol: The Key and Seal
Shortly after Psi Chi's founding in 1929, a key was designed for the society, and also a Psi Chi seal that features the key as its central element. Most honor societies use a key as their main symbol; the majority of these are based on the Greek letters that form the names of the respective societies, and some include various other graphic elements intended to convey additional meaning.
Psi Chi's key is based on the Greek letters "psi" and "chi" with the "psi" graphically extended as a key and superimposed over the "chi." There are no additional graphic elements used as symbols, but the letters "psi" and "chi" have been used for decades in the Psi Chi induction ritual to express the Greek words "psyche" and "cheires," which in turn symbolize "mind" (particularly scholarship and the enrichment of the mind) and "hands" (a symbol of fellowship and cooperation in research). These concepts are developed more fully in the Formal Ritual for the Induction of Members.
The Psi Chi seal places the key at the center of a circle, indicating that scholarship and fellowship are at the center of Psi Chi's mission. In addition to the official name of the society and its founding date, the seal also includes a circle formed from a series of smaller circles, which represent the diversity and the cumulative number of lifetime members which together make up the society as a whole. The outside of the circle is a rope border, symbolizing the fellowship and common goals and mission that bind us together as one unified group.
