MEDIA ASSIGNMENT

Each student will be required to complete a media assignment due January 24, 2000. Chapter Two of the Santrock textbook indicates that a significant concern is understanding media images of adolescents. To complete the media assignment, the student should monitor the media (newspapers, magazines, television, radio, World Wide Web) for one week, identify issues related to adolescence, and write a 500-750 word paper describing: (1) the most frequently expressed concerns; (2) how the concerns are related to material in your textbook; (3) whether or not the concerns are presented in a fair or valid manner; and (4) additional information which would have improved the presentation of the concerns.

TEXTBOOK-IN CLASS PRESENTATION

Each student will team with another student to present information and lead a 20-minute class discussion on an assigned chapter in the Santrock textbook. Students will be given class time to prepare for these presentations. The presentation will be worth 40 points and the requirements are as follows: (1) hand out in class two typed questions related to material in the chapter on February 7, 2000; (2) lead class discussion on these two questions; (3) present information to the class and lead discussion concerning the major topics in the chapter and why they are important to the study of adolescent psychology and lifespan human development; (4) describe major unresolved issues and theoretical conflicts; (6) describe the social policy issues raised by information in the chapter; and (7) describe what you learned about adolescent psychology from the chapter.

WRITTEN ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ON CHAPTERS

Students will be required to write answers to questions prepared by their fellow students on 8 Santrock textbook chapters (excludes the chapters covered the class in which they are making a presentation). These written answers are worth 5 points per chapter for a total of 40 points and are due the class the chapter is being discussed.

BOOK OF READINGS-IN CLASS PRESENTATION

Each student will team with another student to summarize and lead a 20-minute class discussion on the readings in one of the thirteen parts of the Muus & Porton book. Students will be given class time to prepare for these presentations. These presentations will be worth 40 points and should: (1) relate the readings to the Santrock textbook; (2) pose questions for discussion; (3) clarify the contributions the readings make to the study of adolescent psychology; and (4) identify what you learned about adolescent psychology from the readings.

ABSTRACTS

Students will be required to write 50-word abstracts on any twenty (20) readings in the Muus & Porton book and these will be worth a total of 40 points or 2 points per abstract. Abstracts are due April 10, 2000.
