REQUIRED TEXT: ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT- 2nd EDITION JOHN COURSE GOALS: · Use critical thinking to generate practical applications from the study of adolescent psychology · Promote understanding of individual differences in development and the many contributing variables. STUDENT EVALUATION-. There will be seven in-class quizzes that will cover all sections of the textbook. The quizzes will be worth 100 points each. Related lecture and class discussion material may be included in the quizzes. A total of 700 points are possible from quizzes. A maximum of two quizzes may be made up if the student has an excused absence. Make-ups will be given during the course final examination scheduled time. There will be seven written assignments taken from the "What do you think?" questions at the end of each chapter. Each assignment will consist of six of the questions and will be worth thirty points. It will be due in the class one week prior to the quiz for the corresponding chapter(s). A maximum of 15 points will be awarded for any assignment that is submitted more than one week late. Students should be prepared to discuss these written assignments in class the night they are due, as well as all the "What do you think?" questions at the end of each chapter. A total of 21 0 points are possible for satisfactory written assignments. Each student will be required to write two public policy letters as indicated in the Public Policy Letter handout. These two letters will be worth a total of 90 points. Extra credit of 25 points may be earned through participation in one hour of Psychology Department research or a third public policy letter. PUBLIC POLICY LETTER ASSIGNMENT DUE: APRIL 26, 2000 Two letters should be written to a state or federal legislator or official and should address two different important public policy issues raised by your textbook. Your letters should advocate for specific public policy changes that should be made to maximize human growth and development during lifespan. Each letter should be from 500-1 000 words long and should clearly refer to your textbook, as well as research described in your textbook. One letter should address a topic in Parts One or Two (Chapters 1-6), while the second letter should address a topic in Parts Three, Four, or Five (Chapters 7-14). The letters may be handwritten. Each letter will be worth a maximum of 45 points.
