ITINERARY

We will fly from Jacksonville to Vienna, Austria. On our trip through Europe, we will travel by bus and sleep in hotels. Vienna is the capital of Austria and as the former center of the Austro-Hungarian empire, it has been a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe.  In Vienna, we will visit the Freud museum, the place where the founder of Psychoanalysis lived and worked. We will also see the Hundertwasser-House, which is one of the most original architectures worldwide. Part of the program is a meeting with students and faculty at the Universität Wien.
Castle Neuschwanstein
After 4 days in Austria, we will drive to Munich, Germany. On the way there, we will stop in Salzburg, Austria the town where Mozart lived most of his life and where the real story of the movie, the Sound of Music, took place. On the next day, we are scheduled to visit the world’s most famous castle, Neuschwanstein, which was built by the ‘crazy’ king Ludwig II of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein served as inspiration for the sleeping beauty Disney world castle.

While in Germany, we will visit the Dachau concentration camp built by the Nazis under Hitler. This is a place of horror.
Dachau Entrance

Then we drive to Bamberg, Germany which is a world cultural heritage site as declared by the UNESCO. Bamberg is also known as the Rome of Frankonia, since it has many churches and is built on seven hills.
Bamberg Old Town
Most visitors of Neuschwanstein and Bamberg describe the sites as from fairytales. We will meet students and faculty members of the Psychology department of the Otto-Friedrich Universität Bamberg founded in 1647. After Bamberg, we will drive to Leipzig, which is located in former Eastern Germany. This is the town where the first psychology laboratory was built in 1879 by Wilhelm Wundt. In Leipzig, we will visit two of the worlds’ most renowned research institutions of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences and the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology. We will get a guided tour through the zoo to see extraordinary primate research. This is our last stop and we will then fly back to Jacksonville.
