Dr. Dominik Güss and Dr. Ma. Teresa Tuason received funding from the Academic Affairs Transformatinal Learning Opportunity (TLO) Grant to offer a study abroad course focusing on Culture and Psychology in Austria and Germany. A group of about 16 students will travel to four cities and visit locations that detail the origins of Psychology, institutes that are most famous and well-acclaimed in modern Psychology, and historical sites of world cultural importance. The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Florida invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Psychology. The department includes 21 full-time faculty, more than 500 undergraduate majors, and master’s programs in General Psychology and Counseling Psychology. The faculty and the administration are committed to the development and expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs in Psychology, and the Chair will be expected to lead the department during this period of significant opportunity.
January 2007 Dr. Iver Iversen with researchers M. Boules, A. Oliveros, A. Shaw, K. Williams, J. Robinson, P. Fredrickson, and E. Richelson at the Neuroscience Institute at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, published the paper, "The neurotensin receptor agonist, NT69L, suppresses sucrose-reinforced operant behavior in the rat," in Brain Research (Vol. 1127, pp. 90-98). December 2006 Dr. Iver Iversen published the paper, "Contingencies of reinforcement in stimulus control," in the European Journal of Behavior Analysis (Vol. 7, pp. 137-142). Dr. Jurek Karylowski with undergraduate student J. Ranieri published the paper "Self as a default target in thinking about traits," in Self and Identity (Vol 5, pp. 365-379). Dr. Jurek Karylowski with J. Niewiarowski, published the paper "Znaczenie reprezentacji ja i osób dobrze znanych dla oceny behawioralnych i emocjonalnych wlasciwosci osób trzecich [The role of cognitive representations of self and familiar others in thinking about behavioral and affective attributes of acquaintances]," in Czasopismo Psychologiczne (Vol 12, pp. 39-46, in Polish). November 2007 Dr. Christopher Leone made several presentations with his students at the annual meeting of the Society of Southeastern Social Psychologists in Knoxville, TN. The presentations included "Blame it on the Kid! Need for closure and attributions about child molestation" with M. Bright and LouAnne Hawkins; "The highs and lows of friendship: Self-monitoring differences in casual friendships," with S. Sommerfeld; "Child sexual abuse-it's not so bad! Atitudes about perpetrators and victims of child sexual abuse," with D. O'Connor and LouAnne Hawkins; "Judging others; Effects of sex role and sexual orientation stereotypes, with T. Ball; and "Safeguarding close relationships: Self-esteem and maintenance strategies," with M. Wilkstrom. October 2006 Dr. Iver Iversen published the paper "Basic research, application, ethics, and recommendations regarding non-contingent reinforcement procedures," in the European Journal of Behavior Analysis (Vol. 6, pp. 83-88). Dr. Jurek Karylowski published the paper "Familiar others as reference points in judgments of traits" in Polish Psychological Bulletin (Vol 36, pp. 89-97). August 2006 Dr. Dominik Güss presented the invited paper, "Why do they hate us? - a cultural-psychological theory of suicide terrorism," at the Oxford Round Table, Global Security in the 21st Century, at the University of Oxford's Lincoln College in Oxford, England. Dr. Güss also presented "Complex problem solving around the world," at the Colloquium of the Max-Planck Institute for Cognition and Action in Leipzig, Germany. July 2006 Dr. Dominik Güss was the convener of the symposium "Complex Problem Solving Around the World: Adventures Among Individuals, Groups, and Different Methodologies" at the 18th International Congress of the International Association for Cross-cultural Psychology is Spetses, Greece. The Contributors in this Symposium were: C. Dominik Güss, Hora Tjitra, Patricia Simon, and Hana Panggabean. Speakers were from Indonesia, China, Germany, and the U.S. Dr. Dominik Güss and Dr. M. Tes Tuason presented the paper, "'The whole forest is burning!' Strategies in complex problem solving," and the paper "Stages of complex problem solving in Brazil, Germany, India, Philippines, and the United States" at the 18th Conference of the International Association of Applied Psychology in Spetses, Greece. Dr. M. Tes Tuason, Dr. Dominik Güss, A. Marcetic, K. Raymond, S. Robers, K. Stuart, and J. Rearick presented the poster, "Giving psychology away: A participatory action research on a community after-school program," at the 26th International Congress of Applied Psychology in Athens, Greece. At the same conference, Dr. Tuason with June 2006 Dr. Dan Richard and J. Ford presented the poster, "Image perception and task switching: Measuring unconscious bias toward Middle Eastern males," at the Special Symposium: Psychology of Terrorism during the 18th Annual Association for Psychological Science Conference in New York, NY. Dr. Richard and C. Quarterman presented the poster "Personal experience, formal training, and interpreting research outcomes in psychology" at the same conference. May 2006 Dr. Iver Iversen gave two presentations, "The role of remote stimuli in the control of behavior," and "The role of feedback in human motor learning," at the annual meeting of the Association for Behavior Analysis in Atlanta, GA. March 2006 Dr. Christopher Leone presented the following posters with students at the annual Southeastern Psychological Association Convention in Atlanta, GA: "Stereotyping gays’ and lesbian’s risks for sexually transmitted diseases" with February 2006 Dr. Susana Urbina published "Portrait of a great mind [Review of the book The autobiography of Alexander Luria: A dialogue with The Making of a Mind]" in PsycCRITIQUES—Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books (Vol. 51, No. 7, Article 1). Dr. Susana Urbina published three articles in The Encyclopedia of Human Development [N.J. Salkind (Ed.), Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage]: "Standardized testing"; "Alfred Binet" with L. Henderson; and "Crystallized intelligence" with L. Henderson. January 2006 Dr. Jurek Karylowski with J. Niewiarowski, and S. Davis presented the poster, "Defining traits differently for self and others," at the Annual Convention of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in Palm Springs, CA.
