Funds Available for Use by Students
Physics faculty are actively involved in their research. Many of the faculty secured external or internal sources of funding that allow them to hire students to do research. Please do not hesitate to contact individual faculty and ask them about research opportunities in their laboratories.
Hercules Endowed Scholarships
The Department of Chemistry & Physics is offering several full and partial tuition scholarships endowed by the Hercules Foundation for the 2008 Spring term. Scholarships plus some book allowances are available in each discipline for declared academic majors in chemistry and physics who plan to pursue industrial, governmental, and academic employment or graduate school in these disciplines following graduation. Candidate students should meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Declared major in Chemistry or Physics.
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class standing during the 2007/2008 academic year.
- Full time student status taking a minimum of 12 hours at UNF during the Spring 2008 term.
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.00 and minimum GPA of 3.00 in major with a minimum of 1 semester completed at UNF.
- Reside in Florida for tuition purposes.

The deadline for application submission is Friday, January 25; scholarship awards will be announced by Monday, February 11.
Student Research Awards
Summer, 2008
The Department of Chemistry & Physics will be offering four research awards for students in chemistry and physics for the year 2008 summer term. Each award will consist of a grant of $1800 per student plus $200 for supplies and an opportunity to conduct research with a science faculty member.
Interested students and faculty should submit a joint research award proposal consisting of the following:
Faculty:
A project proposal outlining the purpose, scope, and approaches of the research along with the responsibilities of the student.
Student:
A personal document outlining career goals and how the proposed research will help in their achievement. A copy of the latest grade transcript should also be attached. Applicants must still be a student during the summer term.
Note: As part of the process, we are requesting this year’s awardees present a poster review of the research at a natural sciences seminar during the fall term or at the UNF Research Symposium during the Spring 2009 term. Other faculty are also encouraged to present a poster on their research.
The proposal with all supporting documentation should be submitted to Dr. Phil Davis, 50/3624 by Friday, March 28.
